Alright, all over the news today people have been making a big fuss over Chicago not being picked to host the 2016 Olympics.

If you didn't know, Chicago tried to press their American power on the Olympic committee. They had speeches by the President, his wife, and Oprah for some reason...
Anyway, everyone in Chicago thought they were a shoe in, but they got eliminated in the first voting round. The "winner" was Rio de Janeiro, the first time a city from South America was chosen.

So what are your thoughts? Are you pissed about Chicago not getting picked? Or maybe happy for Rio? Don't Care?

Me personally, I think it is funny how they are making such a big deal about it, the US has already hosted the Olympics quite a few times. It's funny how they thought having Pres. Obama speak would make the commitee pick Chicago. I realize not all of you on AG aren't American, but I'm sure you could still add to this.

@TSL

For all you know, his alternative to going to Denmark was playing golf. Or sitting behind a desk, waiting around, not doing anything. It's not as though he skipped a security briefing, and we can't judge where he goes without knowing his entire schedule.

Considering I live only 1 state over from Chicago, I'd be annoyed with all the fuss about the Olympics.

I live around 15-20 minutes away from Vancouver, for the 2010 Olympics. The roads here are horrible for traffic as it is... as in sitting for half an hour to get over a bridge. Not saying that other people don't have it worse though...

The Olympics are really hyped up of course around the world. This brings an amazing amount of attention (quadruple alliteration FTW), and the city will be packed, and bring so many more problems. Living in or near the host city of the Olympics can be crappy. Especially since the tickets are ridiculously expensive, so the average people don't actually get to go to much. And plus, you have to enter a lottery to get a ticket... so there's a chance you may not get one at all even if you live in the host city.

So don't worry about Chicago not getting it. I can't imagine what it's going to be like, getting to school, by car or bus when it is usually supposed to take 5 minutes. Blah.

And congratulations to Rio de Janeiro.

That may have been one of the reasons they didn't pick the US: They didn't like the fat they were being pressed by the President to go for his country. It might have caused a bit of resentment.

Guess it must be nice for Brazilians: Like the Uruguayans when they won the first FIFA World Cup, they get to be the first South American country to host the Olympics. Congrats to them!

Hummm...What do I see here? Oprah as a woman gaining political strength due to donations she made during Obamas campaign. Yeah that seems good. Why didn't our head of the Olympics commitee [we do have one] try to sway the elite panel. They didn't want to be pressured into any situations. No pressure,No problem..Go somewhere else. [Rio]

You know the having the olympics in your country is a great money maker and will increase tourism. I can see why any country would want it but Obama should let a more deserving coutry go for it.

In 1976, it took Montreal 30 years to pay off the debt from the Olympics. Businesses around the area would benefit (hotels, restaurants, etc), but over all it costs a lot more than is gained.

@ topic creator

You are looking WAY too much into American power here.

Every country brought their President (or Prime Minister) to speak. It's just what they do.

1) it's an honor to have the olympics in your city (or country). It means that your city is one of the better in the world.

2) they have to make sure that the Olympics get to different parts of the world, to give everyone a fair opportunity to go.
