People will use religion to cover up their real desire: power. India and Pakistan are not at odds with each other over religion, it's over the Kashmir region. The Palestinian conflict is barely about religion, it's about land and power. Even the Crusades were about power, with religion masked over it.
Of course, many religious people are so easily convinced that these conflicts are religious that they will go fanatical to please their God.
It's a probability. It sounds pretty ridiculous that humans would do such a thing, but we are capable of destroying the Earth. That's why I'm packing for the moon. lol

Possibly we can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect the future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and our future, then what sort of future is it,and what will we be? and there is no future for those killed and what of those who did the killing? what kind of future is it?a future with bloodied hands?not my future...i'd rather be dead...
Personally, if we do end up destroying ourselves (which would not shock me), I don't think it will be over religion. The world leaders (as best I can tell) tend to not fight over religious issues, but rather over economic and especially power struggles. Blowing ourselves out of the water will be a political failure, if anything, in my opinion.
