I am reading a book that challenges the Standard Social Science Model. The book is written in question and answer format. I am curious to how some of you will respond to some of these questions.
Why do men like blond bombshells? (and why do women want to look like them?) What causes the "idea" image of a woman to exist?
Note: By bombshell, I mean women who "define" the definition of beauty such as Marilyn Monroe and Jessica Simpson.
Interpret the question however you want, but be serious in explaining your answer.
I'm not sure they really do. I mean, heterosexual men are obviously big fans of attractive women, but specifically the blond bombshell? Not so much.
I mean - to your example as well you cited Marilyn Monroe and Jessica Simpson; both are just a big slice of Americana. One is a Hollywood starlet, the other oozing that classic 'southern charm', both have a sizeable rack, and both are quite pretty; not to mention both of their careers/images have heavy associations with sex and sex appeal. Would it be so different if they had been brunettes? I don't really think so. Hell, my personal preference lies with women with dark hair anyway.
As for why men like them or why a woman would want to be like them; I think it comes from people's desire to be the best, or have the best - and in order to be, or have "the best" there has to exist a model (literally or figuratively) to base that image on, whether or not they actually are the best.
To speculate on why it's blondes, I think it's a crafted stereotype that comes specifically from Marilyn herself.
The idea of blonde bombshells is a media construction. The media thinks men want size 0 women, but it's just not true. The average man prefers a size 12 to 14 woman.
It's true. I'm not skinny, and I always have guys hitting on me. My skinny friends never do. I still don't understand it though.
It's a biological thing. People are sexually attracted to those who look like they could produce a healthy child. Women who are most likely to produce a healthy child tend to be in the size range of 10-18. Being too skinny, or too overweight is not healthy. This will also affect the child in the womb. A skinny mother can be malnourished, while an overweight mother will have complications related to her weight, which will negatively affect the child. But women between 10-18 tend to be the healthiest, so men will be most attracted to them.

Not always. Some men may be looking for a good woman to raise a child with but the majority of them want some one who is "hot", or physically attractive. Every man is different.
Some like big butts, and can not lie, while their other brothers can't deny. And when a girl walks in with an itty-bitty waist and a round thing in their face, they get sprung.
Hmm, that sounds familiar for some reason.. maybe not.
Anyways, men have their preferences, as do women. The majority of the time it's just what society accepts as "retty" or "handsome".
I am going to pick at those links that TheListman posted.
The Age Yes, according to the test, just as many men enjoyed the size 14 woman as they did the size 12 woman. However, if you look closely, the size 12 and 14 women both have smaller hip-to-waist ratios than the size 8 girl. At least, that's what it looks like. Just something to sit on.
When the site gets to the part where the Head of Cleo Magazine starts talking, everything from that down becomes biased and just isn't worth taking seriously.
TheDaily Not too much to say here. It's a news story and information is lacking. They didn't even show any of the sketches, which would have been helpful.
I am only questioning the credibility of those two sources. For those of you who will actually read this post, I shall add another question.
Do men like curvy, big breasted women because of the media? Or are men's obsession over boobs implanted in their brains? Why? The same goes for why men prefer curvy women.

Some evolutionary scientists would chalk it up to the reasons thelistman cited - biological imperative. Women who are shaped/formed in a particular manner are more 'leasing' to the eye as those are physical attributes that relate to child-bearing/rearing.
To break attack a basic part of this though:
Do men like curvy, big breasted women because of the media?
If you take a glance at any fashion magazine I don't think you could call many, if any of the super/models - 'curvy'. Most of them have a small bosom and a waif-like figure. If anything, the media bias is in the other direction. That said, I think it puts more to the theory that such attraction comes from the mind rather then from the media.
I personally have never found blonde hair more attractive. Red heads/Brunettes have always been what I like best, but I don't like girls that are so skinny that they weigh almost 100 pounds or something. As for big breasts, those never really attracted me either, in fact, some over weight girls breasts are so huge it makes me less attracted to them.
I think another reason for attraction is exotic factor. Natural blondes are not that common and that helped raise their desirability. Thanks to hair coloring it seems like blondes are kinda meh. When color was introduced to movies redheads became the rage for a while.
As to the breast size deal that is diverse for desire as well. Plump breasts would indicate a well developed mammary gland and therefore good for healthy children. Plus they are fun to play with. Too small seems like less of a problem to most guys since we understand that they grow when babies are born. Disproportionally large on the other hand leads back to the health issue stated by someone earlier.
Also has anyone else noticed that playboy likes to use blondes as much as possible. All of the chicks used in the girls next door have blonde hair if I am not mistaken. To go with this thought pattern they keep saying sales are plummeting for playboy as well. Last time I picked up an issue all the women looked the same.

I don't know where you live but where I live i'd say 30-40% of the people at my school are blonde, and of those that i've asked if that was their true hair color for around 80% of them it was.

I'm guessing he means during the evolutionary process... But he'll probably have to tell you

You mean that blonde hair is reccesive? Yes, but when 2 blondes have a kid, that kid is blonde normally. And when natural selection seems to favor blondes, then they really aren't that rare then are they.
