They're trying to achieve the right goal, but using the wrong methods. America obviously is a fat nation... the fattest in the world, I believe, but that is our busy American culture nowadays. . The reason this happens is that America is so busy; fathers have work from early in the morning to late at night, children have school then practice for sports or after school activities, and women are becoming ever more of a presence in the workplace. This leads to no one being able to stay home and cook a traditional, home style meal. Instead, people need to eat something that is quick, cheap, and easy. Fast food, like McDonalds, Taco Bell, and even pizza fits that category of being quick, cheap, and easy. The down- side is that those types of foods are extremely unhealthy. This has been happening for a while (about the 70's, I think,) so our bodies are accustomed to the fatty intake, and we're not at too major health risks. Of course, there are people that go overboard and just eat, eat, and eat some more, but obesity is the fault of culture. Plus, I've lust learned that fatty junk foods are about as addictive as heroin, and that has a huge part in it.
In Japan, Women would not work. They would stay home and be able to cook a home style meal, thus Japanese families are very thin. Just now, the women in Japan have been able to start getting jobs, so the same thing is just beginning to happen over there as it is here.

I stand corrected, BUT Take in consideration that these populations are substantially less than America's. So, that can be a major factor in determining overweight.
