I didn't quite get why they would smash a perfectly good guitar on stage. That thing probably cost a few hundred bucks, and then to just smash it is a bit of a waste. Come on, Pete, don't be a guitar hater...

I think it is Monterey where they threw a guitar into the audience and I always wondered how no one got hurt.... mind you the hippies were probably so high they wouldn't have noticed.

Pete reckons it is "auto-destruction" some art thing.... but as far as I know it started when he broke the neck of a guitar by accident on a low ceiling and the crowd loved it so it stuck. But for a while they were destroying more stuff than they could afford.
