SPECIAL used to be a term that meant that you have done something amazing or original or something that wasn't common. it would mean good things like a complement but now of days it can be taken as an insult mainly bec. the "special kids" aren't what they used to be. My question is it good to tell everyone that there special in their own little way, which has made children feel accomplished without actually doing anything, or is it making kids feel that they can be special without having to do hard work and amazing feats?
It mean's something along the line of mentally retarded
That's the slang term. The real special means exceptional, superior, or one that is exceeding expectations of some kind; of a distinct or particular kind or character.

It is great every now and then to compliment someone about something. It can be anything. Someone might be better than someone else at something. You don't have to point that out, but you can say "wow, you're special at this kind of stuff!". Some people have their own unique, or special, way of doing something as well. Complimenting them, saying that they are special while they feel that they are ordinary is great, but buttering them up too much may not be too great; some people might actually take that in the head to much.
yeah, special now means dumb, but even the real special(superior) means nothing anymore, only the amount of paper that says degree, masters degree, doctorate, and whatever in your hands makes you special now...they may not even look at how ugly you are now!!!
...this is an almost funny thing to me, as my sister always tells me to do something, and when I ask her why, she says, "Because your special." To me, special means to be unique, to be you.Special, to me, isn't being talented, or 'awesome' or even 'epic'. (Lol, epic. I laugh at that word.) Special, to me is unique. I wonder what my sister thinks of special...and what everyone else thinks about it.
I share this with a good bunch of people: It is better being weird than being normal, if normal means you have to pick on others for no reason. Sadly in our society everyone wants to be special or unique and to stand out, and with everyone doing so, you might end up standing out more by being, well, normal. At the same time it is the nature of social beings to be in groups where you have to look like others to be accepted. If you don't you will be weird and out of the community, and it will lead to disadvantages. These groups can be special, but the members of the group will often look and be like each other.
On the "You are special in your own way", I will just say it is something nice to say to someone. That they stand out for something positive, unlike "Oh, he is - speshul" which would be the negative case. It depends on how it is said, for what reason it is said and so on. A lot of what has to do with how we act in real life, instead of on the internet, where it is easily misunderstood, twisted and turned or simply ignored.
I would say there is special (positive context), and then there is "special" (negative context).

You are all individuals!
(crowd replies) Yes, we are all individuals!
You are all unique!
(crowd replies again) Yes, Yes, we are all unique!
Was I the only one who thought of Jose Mourinho when I saw this thread? (just wondering)
I'm not a huge fan of conformity I think people should be individuals but what I hate more is the people whi try to be "special" and different. There are so many people ay my school who put more effort into being different than they put into being themselves. (<cough>starved of attention<cough>. Anyway as you say the meaning of the word "special" has changed in the past few years..... I don't think being special is seen as a good thing anymore.
In terms of mentally/genetically disadvantaged individuals, "special" is just a euphemistic term to describe mentally deficient individuals. It's sole purpose in this sense is to create a reference to mental individuals, without making them feel like crap, which is easily accomplished by the phrase "mental" or "retarded", etc.
You are all individuals! (crowd replies) Yes, we are all individuals! You are all unique! (crowd replies again) Yes, Yes, we are all unique! (one man in the crowd) I'm not.
if youre going to quote life of brian, at least give them some kind of mention.
