Hurt Locker definitely stole a bunch of awards Basterds deserved. Best screenplay, best director, dare I say it, best picture. Hurt Locker was a good movie but didn not measure up to Basterds - it was Tarantino's best. I think they gave best director to Bigelow so Hollywood could have feminism to brag about, and quite frankly for the irony of having a former spouse of James Cameron shut him out. It was really disappointing - I was certain the Basterds would sweep those awards, because they deserved them.
Basterds deserved best screenplay and director more than Hurt Locker for sure. Not once in that movie did i think about the characters as the people who were playing them. Also, the ending of Hurt Locker SUCKED big monkey balls and made me go "eegh".
Hurt Locker won because it was about how fucked up war is, and how fucked up the Iraq war is.
