If you think that, then you do not have the ability to comprehend Modest Mouse's/Arcade Fire's lyrics. Both bands have much more lyrical prowess. Simple Plan isn't bad or anything, it's just that MM is way, way better :P
I've always preferred Pearl Jam to Nirvana. Nirvana was always a bit pretentious for my tastes. I do like their musicianship, though - Smells like Teen Spirit has a good hook and beat to it, for example.
No one's mentioned The Smashing Pumpkins?! Oh man. They're definitely up there on the greatest Alternative band's list. Here's my favourite Alternative bands..
