As you may or may not know on 6th May there will be a General election in the United Kingdom to determine a new Prime Minister; I'm making this thread partially for people to discuss it since it's really hottintg up (especially after the first of the TV debates). But, since during the American elections I, as a Englishman, was bored stiff being shown all kinda of debates and comaprisons and info on TV and in print etc. for Obama and McCain that was, to an extent, irrelevant to me, I was wondering what effect the U.K. elections were having in other countries; in America, in common-wealth countries etc. are you getting the same coverageof the UK election I got of the American one? Or is it a one-way street?

Anyway thanks for any posts it'll be interesting to see how much information apsses each way

Foregin policy wise, the only thing the Americans need to worry about is the lib dems getting in and getting out of Afghanistan. Although that's like saying the Americans have to worry about fairies stealing all of their gold reserves.

Commonwealth countries are just for show. We do the vast majority of our trade with the EU, the US and China.

re you getting the same coverageof the UK election I got of the American one? Or is it a one-way street?

I really don't think many people care, as much as we'd like to think they do.

I just remember the US election getting rammed down my throat and wondered if it was our media being 'tards lol.

What are the dominant parties in Britain?

Labour(centre-left), Liberal-Democrats(centre-left) and Conservatives (centre-right) are the top 3 and nomrally the lib-dems are a bit behind the other 2.

The lib dems are actually ahead of the tories in the polls at the moment, behind labour. I should think it's only a temporary swicth due to the honeymoon period of the debates, and either way, it won't translate into seats in the general election. Bloody fptp.

The Lib Dems would mess up the country worse than labour. Britians only good Prime Ministers have been Conservative ie. Winston Churchill, Disreali. If they dont win the only have parties that wont ruin the country are the BNP and UKIP.

I hate the media. I watch hln and cnn every single morning and read my local newspaper. I have not seen a stitch of any news about Britain's general election. I hate this nonsense.

It pissed me off when I was watching hln and some 80 people died in a mine in china. They just said a one-liner about it and then moved on to: Will Elin Divorce Tiger?!?!?!?!

Shoot. Me. In. The. Face.

Why not try them out? In Cable they have the sharpest economic mind in the country.

Britians only good Prime Ministers have been Conservative

That's a pretty dubious assertion since the two major reforms of the 20th century came from both the left of centre parties.

Winston Churchill, Disreali

Churchill. You must be joking. He was an ok war time leader, but was pathetic post 45. Too old and too out of touch. Britain stagnated under his leadership whilst every other developed nation was advancing. He has a lot to answer for.

Disreali.

A different era, and so pretty irrelevant. Besides, Gladstone was better.

If they dont win the only have parties that wont ruin the country are the BNP and UKIP.

Oh. Sorry for taking you seriously back there. Neo Nazism ain't a joke my friend. If the BNP got in, I'd likely be deported.

Shoot. Me. In. The. Face.

You didn't miss much. UK election races are so brief anyhow.

I think there would be quite a few who would voluntarily get deported a BNP Britain is something I don't even want to think about >.< I know some people who suport BNP and it is depressing to talk to them.... mainly because their knuckles are draggin along the floor.

Britians only good Prime Ministers have been Conservative

It's not really the best pointer of who to vote for.... past succeses don't mean much and anyway like firefly said the other parties have had some stand out leaders.

Nope, haven't heard anything about it. I guess the media doesn't care about it.

I don't support BNP, I'm a Conservative. All I said was that BNP wouldn't be as bad as Labour or Lib Dems. Anyway, if someone wants to vote BNP, let them have their opinion. They have to live their. You don't go around bashing Muslims or Hindus. Nazis have nothing to do with this. If you have a problem with people like the BNP slagging them off and being stereotypical makes you as bad, if not worse, as them. And Firefly, they do have power. They have seats in most local councils and the European Parliament. They might even have got seats in the U.K. Parliament if they were formed in the last General Election. Anyway, the BNP don't hate all immigrants, only illegal ones, so anyone that should be offended shouldn't be here anyway. They're not Nazis. You don't call Americans Nazis and their immigration system is much harder than what the BNP propose. This is what they think. It doesn't hurt you in anyway.
And just to reiterate I'm Conservative, not BNP.

Easy to say if you're not up for deportation.

Anyway, if someone wants to vote BNP, let them have their opinion. They have to live their. You don't go around bashing Muslims or Hindus.

That's because most Muslims and Hindus don't vote for extremist parties.

Nazis have nothing to do with this.

Considering they adopt Nazi esque policy on most issues, yes it does.

If you have a problem with people like the BNP slagging them off and being stereotypical makes you as bad, if not worse, as them.

Not really, it just makes me feel better.

They have seats in most local councils

That's just quite simply a lie.

the European Parliament

2 seats out of 736. My, what a landslide.

Anyway, the BNP don't hate all immigrants, only illegal ones, so anyone that should be offended shouldn't be here anyway.

They define the only people who should be able to live in Britain as those who have been here for 17,000 years. It's not just illegals they are after.

They're not Nazis.

Basing policy on race is something the Nazis do. Allying themselves with neo Nazis in the EU as well as hosting events with the American KKK in the UK is patently Nazi.

You don't call Americans Nazis and their immigration system is much harder than what the BNP propose.

Perhaps you should learn about US and BNP immigration systems before you continue to spout lies.

This is what they think. It doesn't hurt you in anyway.

Me, half my family, my girlfirend and her entire family getting deported. Yea, nothing to worry about.

And just to reiterate I'm Conservative, not BNP.

That does figure.

If you want to make me seem like a bad person, I will be one. If you don't like it, get out of our country.

Ahh, so you've finally shown your true colours. Going from ''it doesn't afect you, people should be able to think whatever they want'' to ''get out of our country''. How consistent of you.

One day to go and I'm pretty confident who I'm going for..... though my mate (a BNP supporter) has said he'll break my legs if I vote for Liberal Democrats.

But the major issue is that the bakery in my village is giving away free eclairs to anyone who votes nom.
