Recently, I cut down on the amount of salt I use on my food. I believe it's something everyone should do. Apparently, Sam thinks so too. The FDA plans on limiting the amount of salt used in processed foods. HotAir seems to disagree.
The FDA plans on slightly lowering the amount of salt used in processed foods every year so that Americans can adapt to the change without noticing what's happening. They will decide how much salt can be used in each product and lower that amount slightly each year until they are comfortable with the cut.
"We can't just rely on the individual to do something," said Cheryl Anderson, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who served on the Institute of Medicine committee. "Food manufacturers have to reduce the amount of sodium in foods."
If that didn't slap you in the face as an insult, then you need to wake up.
Apparently, the government thinks we can't make our own decisions. Should we really rely on daddy Sam to hold our hand so we don't make possible mistakes? It's fair to make producers label what's in their food, but to control their recipes? To control what we can buy?
There are soooo many things you have to keep aware of ranging from mercury in canned fish to chemicals in deodorants. I personally stopped caring a started eating fresh organic food and tofu.
I don't see what the big deal is, here. If people notice a decrease in salt in their foods, they can always just put more salt on it. Surely every person in America who eats processed food is going to have some salt container in his house.

The issue is not whether we have as much salt in our food or not, it's the fact that the government is taking control.
We can't rely on the government to watch our health, that is our own responsibility.
Very interesting and a good idea.
The idea of companies putting less salt into their processed foods is a good idea. The government forcing these companies to do so is not.

The government takes control, but what is America doing about it? Nothing. Americans don't want to deal with the government. They just like to complain about it all the time and wait for someone to do something about how corrupt the government is, but nobody ever does. The government knows that, and that's why they seem to be able to get away with minor things like this.
The government is also worried about how fat their country is, and they don't want to run a country with terrible health, because that would look bad for them. Since most Americans aren't going to change their health problems any time soon, the government is doing it for them so the whole country doesn't have one big heart attack.
When people do have heart attacks from all this salt, they usually have to go to the hospital I assume. Just a guess, but all of those bad cholesterol patients will probably overflow hospitals at some point with this new health care bill. I think your government is doing this to back up Obama's health care bill.
I don't necessarily support it, and my information may be a little misguided here, but isn't the FDA there to keep our food healthy for us? But the comment by that woman was nothing less than a slap in the face, apparently to her we're 6 year old children who don't know anything about the world...
Armpit, you really are ignorant to stereotype Americans the way you do.
The government takes control, but what is America doing about it? Nothing.
Have you not heard of the Tea Party protesters? Agree with them or not, they are doing something about it. There are also many organizations aimed towards specific issues such as family farms, drug legalization, law issues, and so on.
Also, you wrote about how the government is probably ashamed to have such a fat country. UK is almost as fat as America, so don't act as if you're from some superior country.

Although greatly exaggerated, it could be the case. However, I doubt it. There are many powerful people who want to fix regular problems that aren't their business through the government. We call them nannies. For example...
There are people who thought smoking was bad, therefore they wanted to ban it from as many places as possible. Rather than allow restaurant and shop owners to make up their own smoking rules, some nannies turned around and made it a law that you can't smoke in public buildings. Basically, these nannies decided for everyone what they should do.
what! you need more salt, because it makes food taste yummy D:
I get my monthly suggested sodium intake from 1 meal. and look at me! besides the recent couple of heart attacks, Im A-OK!
but yea I understand what youre getting at Nemo, I think too much salt thickens your blood to make it hard for your heart to pump it. Thats at least how this one physician explained it to me in laymans terms. though I'll admit cutting down the sodium makes my food taste a lot less yummy
secretly I cry before I eat to salt my food with my tears.
but seriously I applaud you to be able to take that initiative to cut down the sodium, as I've tried but can't really help it with my college diet (high sodium and carbs (aka ramen)).
haha go DDX looks like I have good food and heart attacks to look forward to in college... Here's an article on what too much salt in you diet can cause [url=http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/news/high_salt_consumption_can_cause_a_range_of_health_problems.htm]
