These sites are very controversial in schools. If you are able to use one, you are automatically able to go to any website in the universe. This could be a problem becouse you could look up some,... Inapropriate things. However, teachers block sites for reasons that are stupid to us so why should we not be allowed to use proxies to bypass some of the stupid bans and get on game sites.
True, and I completely agree. However, we are not simply talking about porn here. We are talking about our rights as students to play games on computers that the school alows us to have...
Though I do not love site blocking at school, computers are put there for educational purposes and not for our personal enjoyment. Anything which does not contribute to learning will have to be blocked out. Pornography and flash gaming does not contribute to learning. Flash gaming almost all of the time, pornography always. It's not your computer, and you must follow the owner's rules as Graham has said. Also, being allowed to use a school computer does not make you its owner.
There are other sites that help students learn yet are blocked because they go against the schools ideas. Also seeing as teenagers sometimes know more about computers than adults, the schools should know that they stand no chance at stopping a determined student.
If it's someone else's computer, you follow that someone else's rules.
My school filters all computers- even laptops you bring from home.
They also censor google searches for video games. This means that you can't even search for "Half-life" or the word "doom," because they happen to be video games.
Additionally, I have had to write research papers about drugs multiple times in my school. But everytime you search for marijauna (or whatever) on the internet, you have to get a teacher to unblock it for you. It is ridiculous.

That doesn't mean that a school also has people who know how to clamp down on all forms of bypassing the filter. Yeah but you're right, it happens sometimes.

Still not your computer. I know it's unfair and I would be unhappy too, but it's still theirs as they are lending it to you for use.

That's just plain stupid. Shouldn't be too hard to bypass such dumb measures.
I went to a technology high school, where we were sitting at computers all day. Naturally, we were always trying our best to get around the proxies. When you are in front of a computer all school day, you need some sort of break... So, we would find one, the principal would block it, and that would go on and on.
I think it depends though on what you are bypassing the proxies to do. If you are trying to view porn on school computers or something, that is obviously not good. But if you are just trying to get to some sites to do research, or even just a few minutes to play a quick game or look at your Facebook for a small break, I don't really see the harm.

No, I'm talking about a laptop that I bought with my own money, and brought to school to use for a presentation. It is my computuer. The same goes for iphones and other personal devices that can be used for internet navigation: all are blocked by the school's internet filter.
I forgot to add that the filter blocks any site that contains curse words. Most of the books we read in my literature class contain f-bombs, so it is very hard to research quotes at school.
According to my school, Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon is "ornographic."
And yes, we do find ways around some of these filters.
At my school you can't type in Wikipedia without it being blocked. They also blocked Google for a while and google videos is permanently shut down.
While some of those deserve it, most don't. In fact, one of my teachers acctually asks for proxies occasionally so she coan go to Youtube.
If in an instance that you need to go on the internet somewhere and it is blocked. Is it permissable to use a proxy and if so, what should punishment be if you are caught?

Did you ever consider that's because you're using THEIR internet? That THEY pay for, and let you use for FREE. If you're going to complain, how about you go buy one of those wireless anywhere sticks for your laptop and pay monthly for your own internet instead of complaining. That's like complaining that someone makes you take off your shoes when you go into their house. I mean, sure it's their house, that they payed for with their money, and they don't want it to get dirty. But I mean, they're your shoes and you can wear them where ever the f*ck you want, right?
I think schools should block all gaming/social networking/pornographic sites, and if you don't agree, you're an idiot. If you really just want to spend all day playing flash games, stay at home, nobody wants you taking up space in their class.
i h8 how skoolz dnt let me go on rmor gamez kuz skool iz boring nd skoolz kant senser me!!!!!!!! i like rmer gamez an i h8 lerning soz i think taht skool shud blok my fav websitezZZZZz!!!!

I lol'd.
Anyways, my school is fairly asinine about it, considering how there isn't a single computer in the entire building that isn't already heavily monitored. There is no skipping your work or class for games or YouTube or whatever. The teachers see every move you make.
Stupid.
And there's only fleeting instances which we get on computers unless you have Keyboarding or Media Masters, which isn't very many people.
aknerd is your computer operating wirelessly or do you plug it into the network via a cable? Because if you're using wireless, what you saying is complete and utter bull,, you can't place a block on the internet, it's worldwide, the schools block our computers via security and privacy protocols built into the browser and intranet, hence the reason an administrator can get around them.
Yeah, schools seem pretty justified in these actions. I wouldn't put it past many of the kids I go to school with to do something like try to look up porn for a dumb joke, and get the mother of all viruses to muff up the schools systems.
