No vinster, that's not hacking. The game is too new for it to have hackers. That effect is caused by lag. Everybody is playing in his own PC, and the movement of axes is unique to each player, yet it is the same for everybody. What happens is that because of lag delay, your opponents look like they are going through spikes while they are actually walking on the ground as spikes are down and axes are a swing away from them
I guess you're right. Some other people could get mixed up and say it's hacking instead of lag. Like I mixed it up. =/
Yes, the visuals of the other players are not synchronised exactly to their current location, that delay in the visual update is normal (and depend strongly on what kind of ping the contestants have on the host) the game has to communicate with each computers to know where is everyone, and to tell everyone where is the other guys.
And so it seems sometime they are going through an axe, but on their computers they are not.
It has happened often that i seemed to be ahead of someone, but in reality he was in front of me.
Nothing really a problem, as with a game that rely a lot on speed, visual delays between people all over the world are unavoidable.
It is definitively possible to get to a bit more than 5 minutes, but you'll really need a perfect run without any mistake or death to achieve such time. The maps are much harder than on multiplayer, making uniplayer a really interesting self challenge.
ExitPath is really a great game to have both uni and multi player that awesome.
I was going to tell Vinster, but it seems you've explained it to the fullest.
I'm in New Zealand, but the lag doesn't seem as bad for me since my internet's around 17 mbps. The only thing you can do is either get uber fast internet, or move to California. (or wherever those game servers are, Michigan?)
lol, despite what people may expect, my best single player time is only about 7 and a half minutes... but then again i havent extensively devoted time to single player either. its true though, that some of the stages in single player are a lot harder than any of the multiplayer stages.
the only 2 achievements im missing are the 7 minute one, and the "dont die before level 17" one. i was happy enough to pull off the "dont die before level 12", which did take me like 20 tries. could probably master not dying before 17 with some practice (and in turn improve my time to under 7 mins), but not really determined to bother, as id rather have fun playing multiplayer matches.
as for the "tie" thing, ive been in several ties, and although i usually win them for some odd reason, i did lose a tie once too. i guess mabye it counts microseconds too (even though it doesnt display them)?

Yes, I assume so too.
I've got all the flairs except for the under seven minutes ones. I'm close to getting them however, all I need to do is to figure out a quick way of getting past those level 29 lasers right at the end of the stage (not the middle). It took me dozens of tries and about an hour, to get the "Do not die before level 17" flair.

Not really.. You can still die a few times.. My lowest time is around 5 minutes and 30 seconds, and I had died like 8 times. xD

My best Uniplayer time is 5:02, and that's with a number of mistakes and non-optimal paths. I'm fairly sure that in most stages it's possible to just gun it through without stopping, but obviously you'd need to put a lot more work into that than I can be bothered to.
Check the leaderboard for what's possible with a perfect game. (Aside from Korea, whose 00:00 time is quite obviously a glitch or hack.)
I believe tie breakers are based upon alphabetizing the winners.
well, i can confirm that most of the ties that ive been in (and won) have been against guests, and my name starts with R... so i dont think thats the case.
