An interesting study, no? It has potential, but I don't really see it as a real breakthrough. It's more of a culmination of the research that's been going on in molecular genetics. For one, molecular geneticists have been transferring DNA in between cells for quite some time now through processes like transformation. We've mapped genomes and found what parts of DNA are noncoding. We've studied the interaction between biology, chemistry, and physics.
Any opinions or interpretations for what this might mean for the future?
Not really, windows is manufactured all over the world and shipped from there, not to mention he gains a salary, he doesn't receive all the money that is received from Windows.

I think this is a pretty amazing breakthrough. The potential would allow us to engineer life to an extent that is only limited to our imagination. (ZOMBIES!)
It's not really artifical life. They just took synthetic DNA and put it into existing life forms that didn't have DNA. That's not exactly what I'd call artificial life, since the original life form was already having been created naturally.
That was just the incubator. The DNA of the offspring was made up of nothing more then the artificial DNA.

I think it is a breakthrough. DNA sequencers, the next best thing, read the DNA, this thing can actually write it, which is a lot more complicated, and is an entirely different process.
I definitely agree with your qualms about the commercialisation of genomes. I also reject some claims that have been made that it is better to hand it over to government. I don't see why they are any more trustworthy than private corporations. Not to mention the great expense these private corporations have put themselevs through in order to create the genome, only to find the technology would be taken out of their hands.
