In actuality, DayCee, EVH didn't invent tapping, it had been done with a pick previously by the likes of Billy Gibbons and Ace Frehley. However, I do believe Eddie was the first to lay down two-handed tapping.
Now, onto my contribution. I would honestly have to go with Duane Allman, he was a wizard!
In fact, his brother Gregg has said that one day, Duane was home sick, so Gregg picked him up bluesman Taj Mahal's self-titled release to listen to. One hour after leaving Duane at home, Gregg received a phone call from his brother telling him to "come see this, baby brother!" Gregg returned home to find that Duane had practically mastered slide guitar playing, with that being his first time ever trying it!
Allman was in high demand as a session guitarist, playing on tracks for big names like Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, and Boz Scaggs, among others. He is also remembered for his lead playing with Eric Clapton's group Derek and the Dominos, playing the famous slide riff on "Layla". Of course these were all dwarfed by his crowning achievement, which was his awe-inspiring lead guitar playing on his own Allman Brothers Band's landmark live release At Fillmore East.
Duane was another who died too young, leaving this world at only 24 years of age on October 29, 1971 in a freak motorcycle accident.
