Which video-game franchise has been most successful since the rise of videogames? Final Fantasy, Madden, Call Duty, or whatever other series there are.

Even though I hate GTA, I would say it has been the most successful franchise in the history of video games.

Call of Duty. The first one got a lot of great reviews and a good reception from the PC gaming community and professional critics and gamers and is now sold on Xbox Live I think and all the expansion packs and add-ons got good reviews and were quickly sold.

The second had multiplayer that is still being played by many PC gamers and there are probably still thousands of copies in circulation. This game also got great reviews and remains one of the highest rated Call of Duty games to this day.

The third one, produced by Treyarch, did not gross as much money but still got ample praise from multiple game critics and the players enjoyed it.

Modern Warfare was one of the biggest selling games on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, was a huge hit on PC, received some of the highest ratings from many critics, was loved by everyone who played it on every platform and its map-packs remains the in the top most downloaded add-ons on the consoles.

Call of Duty 5, once again produced by Treyarch was bought by many people on all major 3rd generation platforms, received good reviews and players enjoyed the minigames and campaign.

Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2 then became the quickest and biggest selling game of all time, winning Infinity Ward, the developers, over a billion US dollars, the game got excellent reviews from various repetitious and profession game reviewers and critics - continuing to impress the large majority of the community, and then the two map packs released afterwards grossed a few millions dollars each.

You see why Call of Duty is the best selling series ever without debate? Yes, other series have sold a Hell of a lot, and quite a number of series (specifically first person/third person shooters) are better but considering Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling game ever, its map packs produced millions of US dollars, all games previously produced in the Call of Duty franchise were also massive hits, some of them completely revolutionising things, and all their map packs being hits there's not much argument left in this thread.

I would say the GTA series, San Andreas was the best selling game for PS2, and the series got very famous.

The three games that took most of my money is Guild Wars (120$ for all campaigns+expansion), Bethesda games (~40$ for Morrowind, 60$ for Oblivion and 60$ for Fallout), and GTA... which are cheaper but I pretty much own all of them.

Yes agreed but Halo 3 as well as CoD MW2 managed to get in the Guinness Book Of Records for best selling games of the Decade!

I think CoD and Halo 3 are the best selling game series.

Have a look at the Xbox 360 best selling games list I found on Wiki.

The top selling Xbox 360 games.
-Halo 3 (8.1 million)
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (7.479 million approximately; 6.471 million in US,85,411 in Japan,at least 1 million in UK)
-Gears of War (5 million, may include PC version)
-Gears of War 2 (5 million)
-Grand Theft Auto IV (4.356 million approximately: 3.29 million in US,at least 1 million in UK,59.893 and 6.210 Platinum in Japan)
-Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (4.226 million approximately: 3.04 million in US, 78,000 in Canada, 54.742 and 53.722 Platinum Collection/The Best in Japan, at least 1 million in UK)[30]
-Call of Duty: World at War (3.35 million approximately: 2.75 million in US, 600,000 in UK)
-Halo 3: ODST (3 million)
-Forza Motorsport 2 (2.674 million approximately: 2.23 million in US, 31,255 and 100,500 Platinum Collection in Japan, 12,600 in Canada, 300,000 in UK)
-Fable II (2.6 million)

Most of them are CoD games . MW2 and Halo 3 got on the top.

MW2 and Halo 3 are the best selling games so I would say The CoD series and Halo Series are the best selling game series.

8.1 million is nothing compared to these PC games:

# The Sims (16 million shipped)[152]
# The Sims 2 (13 million)[153]

* The Sims 2: Pets [expansion pack] (5.6 million)[154]
* The Sims 2: Seasons [expansion pack] (1 million)[154]

# World of Warcraft (11.5 million subscribers)[155]

* World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade [expansion pack] (3.5 million)[156]
* World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King [expansion pack] (4 million)[155]

# StarCraft (11 million)[157]
# Half-Life (9.3 million,[21][22] may include PS2 version)

Don't even get started on the wii:

# Wii Sports (63.46 million)[68]
# Wii Play (27.38 million)[68]
# Wii Fit (22.61 million)[68]
# Mario Kart Wii (22.55 million)[68]
# Wii Sports Resort (16.14 million)[68]
# New Super Mario Bros. Wii (14.70 million)[68]
# Wii Fit Plus (12.65 million)[68]
# Super Smash Bros. Brawl (9.48 million)[68]
# Super Mario Galaxy (8.84 million)[69]

Obviously the wii series has been the most commercially successful. Anything relating to Mario is also pretty damn successful too.

Otherwise, COD has been successful (although they alienated their original (PC) gamer base with MW2), GTA has been successful, Final Fantasy, MGS, Gran Turismo, etc. A lot of very well selling series, but as seen, the wii series is by far the best selling.

That was funny it did sell well but it alienated everyone and how many times does a studio completely disspate after a big video game release.

Fact Mario if you count all the games with him in it.

halo is the best selling SERIES of all time. no question lol, you dont have to like to know that 99% of xbox owners have played it.

GTA is probably the second best seller in an overall series, just cause its been around forever

final fantasy gets number three cause there is so many damn good games that its impossible not to make a but load of money.

mario is also on the list cause well... its fucking mario

zelda also is on top of the list for the same reason

call of duty has had alot of good games this 21'st century so its kinda up there u guess.

then there is also guitar hero and rockband you have to look at.

god i could list so many awesome series's but i think these are the best sellers (without doing any research and in no specific order)

The big minus at PC games it's that they get pirated really fast, that's why console games numbers are much higher.

I don't know about the best selling series, but the top 3 PC series in my opinion are the following :
1. Monkey Island (if you didn't play it, you should really should)
2. GTA
3. Diablo

Some other series, that only some veterans might have heard off :
Larry
Capitan Keen
Space Quest
Dizzy

Wonder how many from here played the ones above .
