No, I dont think that melee units are totally useless, they can pierce armour usually, and they have average damage. But I usually use magical units, becouse they own!
Instead of splash units try the Augments, the green guys with axes from the guild who has techno. Upgraded they do insane amounts of dmg and they have a hit rate of 3.6, so they own. The thieves also do a big deal of damage if you upgrade ranged and elemental, and if you build them via the strenght path (sacrificing loot). They also have a hit rate of 3.6. The way to avoid getting killed by those critters is to make a lot of units, not upgrading too much (attack rate is a must, then strenght).
@ManOfMen: Try one of these (or all at once) -Clear cache: most probably your problem was caused by a corrupt .swf file, so try this first. Go to internet options, click on "Eliminate ______". Be sure not to clear cookies as you'll lose all your saves from flash games. -Update player: go to Adobe's main website and download the updates. On the right of the page should be the "Update Shockwave" button. Click it. -Change your browser: some have issues with flash games.
New tip: inves in Arkandia Jones (once you get a high efficiency), once in a while he comes up with great things (he has just given me a +12 lives thing)
You should try out some of the better melee units like Paladin. But in general, yes, melee units aren't as good as ranged/magic units since they can't hit flying and have abysmal range.
That's why I never use any basic melee units, only advanced ones, because late game (if there aren't too many flying waves, always need to check first), a well placed advanced melee can dish out the pain.
It says I got a Protectomon when I was playing a map, but when I went to check after the map was done I still had none. It also said at the end of the waves that I had earned one piece of loot but I didn't see anything...
Also, how do you get quests from other factions? I want to increase my faction with council of magi.
The protectomons appear in the "Stats" section, you have to click the "Check your collection" but if it's not there then it's a bug. When you gain a piece of loot it appears marked with a chest appearing in the lower part of the screen. If it SAID you had gained a piece of loot then it's probably a piece of equipment for the explorer, which rises his efficiency by 20% (slightly increases the chances of getting a good item). To get quests from other factions first you have to rise your reputation by doing some normal quests, the ones without the bright edges.
@Vrighty: For lvl 14 don't use energy units, just a good hero with physical dmg. You can try giving your best hero an item with elemental switch. Also, you can use melee only as there aren't any flying waves.
wave 14= 32(or40) beetles all realy close together, weak against energy but strong againt physical
something about the map: all waves are strong against energy or physical AND are weak against energy en physical (6-7 waves are strong for poision and fire)
thats why i only use cold
they r al walking units
also: wave 12 is getting to the end... leaving me with 2 lives-,-
Exactly...the trick in many levels is not to go for an element that has a bonus against your targets, but rather for one that no enemy is strong against. Once you learn to read the scout report the game gets pretty easy, there's almost always one obvious trick that'll work.
As for melee...try to find a hero with Raiders melee units. The insane amount of damage they put out easily makes up for their weaknesses.

It didn't appear as loot, it said "You just obtained a Protectomon, go to your stat section to -----" or something like that.
