I've been playing games like fallout 3 and MW2. And while playing those games I thought to myself, could this really happen? What would it be like if bombs would be dropped on this nation where the land is unscathed by warfare. Would people built fallout shelter? Would people actually survive if there was a nuclear holocaust? I would like some other peoples opinions on the subject.
Just to answer the Megaton question -- The largest Nuke the USA has ever dropped/tested was 15 Megatons, Known as Castle Bravo. The USSR also tested a weapon, called Tsar Bomba, that yielded 50 Megatons [And was one of the cleanest explosions ever]. It was, at first, 100 Megatons but then cut down due to fear of it's impact/sustainability.
So, with the prospect of the world's Nuclear bombs being 100 Megatons [Or more, since Nuclear Fusion technology in bombs must have improved by a little in 50 years], I'm sure if a bomb was dropped, -- either the world would rally against the dropper or bombs would ruin a large part of industrialized nations in the world, leading to a dark and gloomy future.
I would do this. If a single bomb were dropped it wouldn't be that bad. It most likely wouldn't be a very large one. Additionally, it most likely won't be in prime condition, therefore it won't produce its maximum yield.
If the bomb got dropped on any Country they would stop what they are doing and retaliate back with a Nuclear Bomb to the other Country. Fallout 3 would eventually happen but without the shelter's and maybe not the radiated Animals. If the bomb was dropped near my Country which is England they would probably target London to kill the Queen and if they started to target my city I would either take to the sewers or get to a shelter. If none of them I would hide in my fridge.
Einstien was once asked what ww3 (with nuclear bombs) would look like. he said he didnt know but ww4 would be fought with sitcks and stones. basicly nuclear war means anyone dependent on grocery store food is screwed, and anyone who grows theyre own needs to be able to defend it from desparately hungry people and keep it growing amd protected from fallout. the only other option is canabalism and even that wont last you forever because the humans who dont survive will eventually decompose and become inedible. i really hope that people just stick with nuclear deterants and the bomb just doesnt get dropped so the main goal is to keep it away from countries/people with nothing to lose or make sure they have something to lose. i dont mean to sound mean its more like if they have a family and a place to call home they probably wont be as inclined to trigger mutually assured destruction via nuclear weopons

Although that is a good idea, the Human kind is greedy and we are always wanting more so no Country will be happy with what they have got. Me personally I think there will never be any peace, the bomb will eventually get dropped but it's a matter of time. After the Afghanistan war you think there will be peace because there is no war going on? The terrorist's if they lose will want revenge and will invade after the years of recovering, they will not let the Death of Bin-Laden go easily. They have apparently planted bomb's in a major Europe city and are threating to detonate them. (They said they was going to detonate them if Bin-Laden was ever captured or killed.)
However you look at it in the end from radiation, nuclear winter, or the nuclear blast itself the human race is pretty much gone.There might be a few survivors but they would have to be in an isolated area because no one would bother nuking that area.
Any survious would die from hunger since all the plants would be killed, and they would resort to cannibalism and that would eventully run out and they would get irritated from the radiated water.
