It is "sometimes" y, when needed. For that Welsh twin word, it was DEFINITELY needed. Every word needs a vowel.

Can anyone create a word 3 letters or longer that is commonly used in english, (not words like hmm or mmm) and does not use a, e, i, o, u or y?

No, probably nearly all the words without vowels in English, rely on the letter y.

Hmm.. I checked a wordlist generator and it came up with a list of onomatopoeia. Crwth was the only exception.

bah, Crwth doesn't count, it's welsh. We all know they can't spell worth a crap.

noooo, it's not in the English language, and as such doesn't fall into the arbitrary spelling structure of english words and as such cannot be used as an illustration of words which exist contrary to english spelling function.

At least it's pronounceable.

I still believe it counts, albeit as a loanword.
