To summarize my feelings of the movie I give you a quote heard at the end of the showing

Yeah, f**k you too Shyamalan

The movie was awful an opinion that is not only mine but nearly every major critic's and almost anyone who was a fan of the brilliant cartoon. So I give you a basic review based on two sections; a comparison of the movie to the cartoon and standalone review of the movie itself.

Compared to the Show

Cons:

1. All the protagonists in the story were white; now it's really not that big of a deal but it's annoying for any long time fan. Also the antagonists were all Asian which made the movie somewhat better for me but created some controversy of racist leanings. Also Uncle Ihro is skinny, what's up with that?

2. Aside from the casts not fitting the characters the three main actors were horrible maybe it was the boring script but honestly I wouldn't have cared if this Aang, or Katara, or Sokka died. They were all flat characters; in fact all the characters were flat (yes even in 3D) which is in sharp contrast to the show where Appa is a dynamic three dimensional character who we can relate to more than any character in the movie.

3. They pronounced the names wrong; Aang sounded like Oong (rhymes with gong), Sokka sounds like Sukka, and Ihro is pronounced Ehro (sounds like hero). They also call Aang the Ahvatar; if nothing else the mispronunciations led to running jokes in the theater.

4. Fire benders can't make their own fire; they need some sort of source.

5. The bending styles all resemble one another and none of them resemble anything close to what they were in the show.

6. The bending requires a lot more actions to cause a much simpler movement than in the show; in fact it takes five earth benders moving together to move a mid-sized rock.

7. The Fire Lord loves and cares for Zuko; well there goes half the plot.

8. Important sub-characters such as Suki and Jet are never explored which makes me wonder what could possibly be in the second movie (it's a trilogy).

9. Momo and Appa get, combined, around two minutes of screen time and the both look pretty bad. To be honest Momo may be my favorite character in the show and his non-appearance nearly ruined the movie for me on its own.

10. For some reason Aang decides that being the avatar means that crappy speeches and letting everyone live is more important than actually stopping the fire nation. So, remember the final battle from book one? It was awful; and there isn't a giant water beast just a big wave.

11. I could've cared less if they killed the moon spirit; when you can't even make the audience care if the moon dies you did something wrong.

12. Did I mention the character development was terrible? Aang's a whiny 10 year old who can't make a speech, Katara and Sokka are just boring, and you barely even catch a glimpse of the true Zuk0.

Pros:

1. Well at least Aang was still an airbender learning to bend water I suppose. The storyline is vaguely reminiscent of the TV show.

The Movie Standing Alone

1. The characters were terrible actors; Noah Ringer (Aang) was boring, shallow, and couldn't preform a monologue to save his life. In fact excepting Ihro the entire cast was just awkward.

2. The action sequences were boring after the first 30 seconds and were repeated again and again throughout the movie.

3.The dialog was stiff and boring, it didn't intrigue me in the least.

4. Without coming into the movie knowing the entire plot (thanks to the show) I have no idea how I would have known what was going on. The narration didn't really help either it basically told you what was on the screen. Rodgert Ebert actually thought the movie was set in the future; thank you plot development.

5. There are around six benders in the entire movie and while benders are fairly rare there weren't a dying breed. In fact one reviewer, mistakingly, through Katara was the last water bender.

6. During the battle scenes Aang and the group just walk right through the middle as if nothing is happening; clearly the Fire nation doesn't want the Avatar.

7. There's a fat white guy playing one of the Northern Water Tribe solider; I laugh at you Shyamalan.

Pros:

1. Aang's arrow was pretty sweet looking and the sets were as well.

2. They tried at least; they failed but they did try.

Conclusion:

It was bad, very bad. You can't put it in a positive light and die hard fans of the TV show will only be able to laugh as Aang continues to fail and fail again to live up to who he should be. At its best it will be a movie you rent during a party simply to laugh at it.

Actually, I wanted to go out of the cinema, but I was just thinking that I might waste the tickets, and I was waiting for the big water creature aang uses to pawn the fire nation at the end, only to know it was replaced by just a big wave.

I think it was the same point in time when I wanted to kick Shyamalan in his-well you know.

As a side note their making a new Avatar mini series

O_O :O
Thats what my face just went through. I hope the movie does not taint the popularity of the mini-series too much.

I really have to put my rating as a 1/10.

Reasons why:
1. They didn't call him Aang Once!
2. They used very bad actor's for this movie.
3. 500,000,000 dollars in the box office worldwide? Everyone wants there money back.
4. It had very bad action and Dialouge. There is no real plot. The only part I like about this is them saving Aang in the beginning.
5. They have very bad tempers.
6. The movie has a lack of problems.
7. Book 1: Water? Oh No, there making a sequel. Hit the Gas! Were Getting Outta here!

OVERALL RATING: 1/10
I am NOT looking forward to watching the second movie. It's a good thing I rented the movie for $1.00.

As a side note their making a new Avatar mini series

It's supposed to be 12 episodes featuring Korra the next Avatar (female water-bender) and Tenzin (Katara and Aang's son. Tenzin is supposed to teach Korra airbenging, Korra has already mastered all of the other elements. Aang is of course dead since there is a new Avatar but will guide Korra just like Roku guided Aang. There are supposed to be some kind of anti-bending people. They're just jealous. The only confirmed setting is Republic City.

1. They didn't call him Aang Once!

Actually they did numerous times. Perhaps you should actually watch the movie.

2. They used very bad actor's for this movie.

I actually disagree. I have never seen the cartoon and know nothing of the story aside from what was in the movie, but I think they did a very good job of acting. While there were several places that seemed, to me, totally corny, I think that is a problem with the writing, not the acting.

3. 500,000,000 dollars in the box office worldwide? Everyone wants there money back.

I highly doubt it. If you are going to make claims, provide proof.

4. It had very bad action and Dialouge. There is no real plot. The only part I like about this is them saving Aang in the beginning.

While I agree that some of the sequences and comments seemed a bit out of place, or that they could have felt less forced, this movie still seemed well done with only a few minor improvements to be made as opposed to a total pile of rubbish as you make it out to be.

5. They have very bad tempers.

Who has bad tempers? The fire people? They are supposed to have bad tempers :P Who else had a bad temper?

6. The movie has a lack of problems.

Not sure what you did here. You list what you find to be numerous problems with this movie, then state that it lacks problems. Mind clarifying?

7. Book 1: Water? Oh No, there making a sequel. Hit the Gas! Were Getting Outta here!

Of course they will. The Avatar is a huge franchise encompassing the tv show, merchandise, games, and now feature films. They never tell such a huge and ongoing story in one movie. Most likely this is already planned out as a trilogy.

What ug5151 meant was that the way they pronounced Aang in the movie is defferent then in the way they did it in the series.

I didn't really like the movie, I'm a huge fan of the series so when I watch the movie I was surprised that they left out some important elements out that is very I mean very important later like Kyoshi island, the Kyoshi warriors and Suki, Soka's love interest not princesse Yue . And Zuko's scare barely noticeable. A five year old could have done better. And the cabbage guy ! You can't have an Avatar movie without the cabbage guy ! My cabbages ! ROFL !

See, this is something I've noticed when a popular series becomes a movie. Fans of the series are used to a far more detailed story, as you can draw out a portion of the plot and give it great coverage. With film you often have to condense the story so as to be able to tell a complete tale within only a couple of hours so many of the fans' favorite or most well known minor details get left out, or have to be changed slightly in order to make the movie work.

As I said, I've never seen the series, or anything else related to The Avatar. My wife rented the film one night as she'd never seen it and didn't know much about it. If you want a movie to tell the same story exactly how the series does, then watch the series. It makes no sense for a franchise to simply transport the series exactly as it is to film. Film will always be different from the series, and if you aren't going to enjoy that then don't bother watching.

The cabbage guy was merely a fan jockes but the minor detail I mentioned (Suki) is actually an important part of the series later on as she is one of the main characters(Soka) love interest and the Kyoshi warriors also play an important part as they are (spoiler alert) part of the first invasion. Now I can continue to bore you with some more series trivia or I can conclude that some important parts where missing.

I see. So is it a bad movie because some major things were left out, which drastically altered the story that you followers of the series are used to? Or is it simply a poorly made movie all around?

You see, as one who never saw any of the series I take the movie at face value and find the good and bad within the movie as it stands, not with relation to the series. Perhaps if you fans of the series could do the same you may appreciate it as a well made film, albeit one that departs from the story you are used to or were expecting.

Honestly I found the movie to be very bad alone and absolutely pathetic when compared to the brilliance of the cartoon (see the OP).

The thing is that the story wasn't so much departed from as it was absolutely removed and filled with worthless bull crap. The cartoon stands as one of the very best American made animes with humor for all ages combined with witty story telling and a fresh idea.
