I was wondering if anyone else uses a linux based operating system. Im currently using Ubuntu and so far its worked great. Well i've recently started using linux and love it. Its almost impossible to get a virus in it since 95% of viruses are for windows and then mac and linux is at the bottom of the totem pole. The only draw back is that you can use windows programs on linux, so if you have warcraft 3 for windows, it wont work on linux. There is a way to run them through a program called wine but i dont know much about that. Oh the best part about downloading ubuntu? you keep all of your windows information, the only change is that when you boot of your comp it gives you the the choice 1.boot windows 2.boot ubuntu. So im not trying to advertise or anything, i just wanted to know if anyone else currently uses it. If you dont, ask around, ubuntu is really helpful if your constantly getting virused

Ubuntu has the ability to install inside of windows which might also bypass your problem.

Oooh, that sounds good. Will it run normally though, as if it wasn't Windows in the background?

I just fear it might make my computer go to nothing, because I don't have any restoration disks or windows disks.

It's inperceptiably slower and if it fails the only thing you should have to worry about it should be unistalling.

Yeah I was able to jack a school computer that they were throwing away along with some other good parts and make a linux only computer. Told my teacher that it was for a zombie bot net project and that I would come back latter to set up the network an use the schools computers as my own person processor farm.

Nice, always good to recycle and build your own computers.

Ubuntu is good (using it right now and using it for many years now, unless you consider Kubuntu a different OS which it really isn't)
so is Debian (used this too).
I don't really have any windows games (except old games like civilization 1-3 and age of empires 1 and 2)
I actually have more dosbox games then windows games
(Master of Magic, Master of Orion, Colonization, and a few quest games)
I think linux is better then windows except for when it comes to downloading things off the internet (Roblox won't work on Linux and I don't have Wubi [dualboot windows/ubuntu]so...)

Compatibility is the only thing Windows beats Linux at.

You use DOSBox too? Eh, I haven't in quite a while but I still have it on my flash drive. AoE I and II too.

oh, i have 2 comps with dual boot ubuntu and windows, ive yet to run into any problems, other than the i have a virus on windows so im on linux for good until i fix that. Just goes to show how easy windows is to get infected you you download a lot of stuff even with a AV.

i love ubuntu, i used it in a computer class in school, and i plan on installing it on our new family computer since we wouldnt really need specific winows aspects. our old one crashed (with windows) but we haven't purchased the new one yet. Does nybody know if you can buy an advertised computer with a blank hard dive? or ask the guys to swap out the one with windows on it for a blank one and subtract the included price of windows? i wanted it cuz its reliable, bulletproof, and free, so i was looking to ut costs by installing it on a lank rather than paying for windows and then never using it.

I recently got Ubuntu on an old laptop, but unfortunately somethings messed up with my wireless card and Ubuntu won't read it. Which then leads into my biggest problem with Ubuntu - it's almost impossible to find clear help online for it. There are tons of help guides and forums for PC and Mac issues, but you have to do a lot of digging if you want to troubleshoot in Linux.

Linux is the best! No problems like windows. I use Fedora and Ubuntu. And my dad works with Linux. The only reason i use windows is because of all the downloads that can only work on windows

Fedora

It's an awesome Linux-based operating system. The article says that according to DistroWatch it is second behind Ubuntu in usage so that must say something about it.

Aren't there several Ubuntu forums out there?

there are forums for ubuntu, but since its open source, if you want to change something or fix something, if you can program it you can run it. I know ive read countless forums and i still cant figure out wine. its probablly just me but idk, anyone else have trouble with wine?
