Googled it. Your president is the richest president in the western world which is probably a bad sign.

Yeah, and not one, like 2 or 3. But the real problem is one thing that is called "Omertà", it's on wikipedia too. 2 or 3 is not enough, and actually there's a lot of populism in those arrests. However, the principle of silence is applied by a lot of politicians too, and some parlamentaries (Is that right?) are mafia's men.

Hmmm. This thread has prompted me to do some reading regarding Italian politics and much of it is very interesting. Looking into Silvio Berlusconi has dug up some interesting and at times worrying facts about his life. Also, I found a great reference on Italian politics. It is an actual textbook on the subject of Italian politics so it's quite interesting to flip through. You can rintsec=frontcover&dq=italian+politics&source=bl&ots=q0s7EKt5sT&sig=JqdU1OGgpXJMRCPwnD3AJoUo5Cg&hl=en&ei=PGdBTNrqOMKC8gaHycQE&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CDAQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q&f=false">view the full textbook online, which I found very cool.

By official data. I think the president of russia is the richest de facto.

Yes but he was referring to the massive private wealth of Silvio Berlusconi. His wealth was amassed prior to his election and is continuing to grow independent of his position. Obviously this raises questions as his position allows him to put forth policy which is in the best interests of his private financial status and clearly creates a conflict of interest.

Yes, that's another problem. Silvio Berlusconi is (him or his relatives) the owner of a daily newspaper, more than 3 weekly magazine, more than 5 free tv channels and 15-20 pay-to-view channels.

Another fact that's quite worrying is the TG1, the most important ad seen television news program; remember that in Italy there are more than 3 TV channels owned by the State (RAI, Radio Televisione Italiana), and TG1 is on RAI1. After Augusto Minzolini became the director, informations are corrupted, or sometimes completely missing. Here there's a strong example: as you can remember, last year there was an earthquake in Italy, more than 300 deads. Our government promised a lot of things, but one year after the disaster (some houses was built, but old houses, the ones which had to be repaired as soon as possible because they're the citizen's homes, are still damaged) it asked the abruzzesi (the land is called Abruzzo) to pay taxes again.

Of course, they made a demonstration.

Tg1, that day, talked about politic, general news, sport, summer fashion, what's the favorite summer food in italy. No demonstration.

That's why we're f****d

Oh, right. I know that can sound stupid, but one of the only places where you can find a bit of truth in the internet (unfortunately is in italian, and it's difficult to understand because the major part is ironic) is Nonciclopedia, our Uncyclopedia

Umm.. not sure what 'official data' you are using to verify personal wealth, but Dmittry Medvedev's reported 2007 annual income is $80,000, and he reported approximately the same amount as bank savings. Medvedev's wife reported no savings or income.

from the wikipedia entry for Dmitry Medvedev

Also, we look at the Italian president's reported personal wealth: Silvio Berlusconi - As of 2010, Forbes magazine has ranked him as the 74th richest man in the world with a net worth of USD 9 billion[1].

from the wikipedia entry for Silvio Berlusconi

Even with Dmitry Medvedev's current salary of ~$400,000 per annum I think it's fairly clear that he is in no way more wealthy than Silvio Berlusconi.
