At the end of the movie when he spins the top does that mean they are in a dream or not? Was it going to fall over? And if they are in a dream how did they get there?
It means whatever you want it to. I mean if you're a negative person, then the top won't fall and they're in a dream. If you're one of those people who like happy endings, it's gonna fall and it's real. Whatever you think, there's no real answer.
Whenever the main actor is in a dream and goes back to reality, he checks to see whether he's in a dream or not by spinning a top. If it is a dream, the top keeps spinning with no end of stopping. If it is real, the top eventually falls over. Follow me so far?
So when he is in the end of the story, it's all touching and everything, blah blah blah, and when he spins the top....it keeps....moving?? Oh noes! His experience at the end wasn't real!
The beauty of the film is that it works both ways with no logical conclusion being drawn. Choose your ending and when you re-watch it, keep a look-out for all clues pointing to your chosen ending.
Well, when I saw the ending, it looked like it was going to continue spinning, which means its a dream, but it wobbled, so the first logical conclusion is that since it would spin steadily for an infinite amount of time in a dream, then it is not a dream. Another point would be: if he really is in a dream, how did he get into it?
It is your own opinion. You can think it fell or if it stayed up. I really do not like how they made the ending, but I personally believe that the top was going to fall. In the dream, the top stays at a steady pace and stance, but the top started to have an unsteady spin meaning it wasn't a dream.
Personally I believe that he was still dreaming, and that it would not fall down, and that he is probably in limbo. There are several things which point towards this:
1. When he wakes up on the plane, the others wake up at the same time as him, and there is only 20minutes left on the flight. Now, note that there was no kick to wake the characters up from the first dream level, as they were shown to be swimming out of the water. This would mean that they would have had to wait for the sedative to wear off - and then would have woken up at different times due to body mechanics etc.
2. The reason he can now see his childrens faces is because Mal is gone. She previously did not allow him to be an architech because she would invade and make things like trains appear (XD), so that means that now she is gone he can control what he likes.
I could write more, but it will probably just end up as tl;dr.
Well folks allow me to burst your bubble. He isn't dreaming. You see everytime that he was dreaming he had a wedding ring on his finger to symbolize his connection to his late wife and the fact he cannot be with his family. However, at the end he sees his kids faces and does not have a wedding right on.
