true but only with the older ones my bro got one close to the first week it came out and figured there is a defect where they put some part which produces a lot of heat (idk which one) right above the motherboard which when played long enough fries the motherboard so suggestion if you get one first get a small fan and hook it up right behind the xbox turn it on when you play and play in moderation
(2-3 hours then let it rest for at least 1 hour)
I am a very well educated person and you are pretty much correct
The red ring of death is caused due to a problem in which the console generates enough heat to activate a sort of "failsafe" in one of the consoles critical chips (I can't remember which one). Once this happens the xbox detects a hardwire failure because the chip is pretty much shut completely down because it got to hot and if it would have gotten any hotter then it would have really messed some stuff up (Really bad) When you send in the console to Microsoft for repair they would do one of two things 1. Replace it with a chip that can withstand higher heat and not have that problem
2. Reset said chip or replace it with same kind and it would happen again fairly soon
Eventually it was all choice 1 and all new consoles had the chip in choice 1 so the problem was not nearly as bad
So yes the fan thing does sort of help and the resting thing
