To me, the best movie with the least special effects was paranormal activity. If you can do better post it.

Avatar. LMAO. JK. But seriously Forrest Gump ftw. That's all I can think of right now.

12 Angry men jumps immediately to mind. The 1957 Version. Except for the opening scene in the courtroom and the closing scene in front of the court steps the whole movie takes place in a jury deliberation room. Oh yeah, and the bathroom

Besides being a "who's who" of Hollywood at the time, and having an amazing cast (Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Klugman, E.G. Marshall, and others) it's one of those movies that must have strong performances from the actors, or fail.

In my opinion, it's one of the better non-special effect movies ever made.

Obviously Forrest Gump. It's one of the greatest movies of all time.

I second with Pauler94. That movie was great yet the parts with the bullets and stuff were special effects.

Dude. Citizen Kane pioneered several special effects and utilized a lot of it.

Star wars, especially the new ones. But seriously probably the godfather would be probably be a good movie even without its special effects.

Maybe dazed and confused. That was a great movie. Or maybe Knocked-Up. They are always showing those two movies on tv.

Napoleon Dynamite. That movie had no special effects whatsoever. It looked like it was filmed by amateurs. That was probably done on purpose, though.
