Hey guys, how are you all doing? this might sound like a common topic, but lately our country has been falling apart, all workers union is striking, or refusing to work, and demanding salary raises. Now our health workers at all the goverment owened hospitals are refusing to work and demanding a 8% salary raise before they go back to work. So whats happening now is that patients are really dying in the hospitals because of no service, no food and no clean bedding. On thusrday the death count was standing well over 10, and it was climbing fast. why does people do that??? whats your opinion on something like this?
Basically, the union has turned into something to weed out competition so big businesses can thrive.
Wasn't there an act or law of some sort written in the late 1800's or low 1900's that was supposed to discourage monopolies of big business? Or did I just dream that? Because it seems to me that the root of the entire problem is big business and its concept.

It depends whether or not they deserve it.
Now our health workers at all the goverment owened hospitals are refusing to work and demanding a 8% salary raise before they go back to work.
Can I get some citation or proof on this?

Again, I'd like a link.

Read the above.
why does people do that???
People strike because they are unhappy with their job.

Well...it depends. You didn't really give us much information. What is the original death count(before striking), what are the workers' salaries, etc...I can't have an informed opinion if I don't know anything.
To: Hyermnestra, The OP is from Africa and after reading this entire thread, I hope all of the preteens and teenagers read this. We, the people of the USA will see this, the current nightmare going on in Africa, in our near future if we don't start voting very carefully, this November. The issues most prevalent from the OP'S STANDPOINT is this: How can striking medical workers be so selfish at a crucial time in Africa's history of economic decline and big business wealth. How can they continue to strike for a 20% payraise when patients are dying. The OP goes on to pose the question, "Is it just in Africa, or is it world wide.
To the OP: My new friend, when it comes to health care the American doctors all took a Hippocratic Oath to treat all people ethically. It sickens and disgusts me when I see so many doctors' office managers hide behind a sign that reads, 'No medicade patients are being accepted at this time", or something equally discriminatory. I haven't done any research on America's current Union disbutes but I also agree with the basics NoName mentioned. That is, big business drives political opinion in the country as I'm sure it does throughout the world. Back in the early days of unions it was formed by workers, then sometime after WWII, the mafia started taking over and it's MY OPINION, that it's that way today. The only long lasting solution, I can see is digging in and taking back our unions. These fights are ugly, people disappear, or worse.
hey guys, thanx for your opinions! To hyper, am I allowed to post link of ofther pages on here? if so please tell me, and i will be happy to do just that, or you can read up on news24.com. they have most of the info on the current situation. To wajor59: thanx for pointing out that i am from SA! Our doctors also took that oath, according to the law, they are not even allowed to go on strike, i am not 100% sure of this fact, but they are demanding a 8.7% salary raise and R1000 (our currency) housing allowence. the goverment is only offering 8.5% raise and a R730.00 housing allowence. Please i am not 100% sure of these facts, but news24 has most of the info.

Yes, of course you're allowed to post links. What else is the "Link" button for? Is this the place you heard this at? More info can also be found hereWhen public service workers strike, one of two things can happen; they can get what they want, or they can be punished badly. It looks like the government is going for the latter option there. I think that closing schools is a bad idea, they're getting paid enough. The way they're trying to intimidate scabs makes me have even less sympathy for them. I think they should get back to work. The military is attempting to help out the government, and I'm sure the situation will escalate soon unless the strikers back down. This is South Africa, after all. No offense or anything. And to answer your question: 1. Strikers strike because they want better wages/better treatment/etc. Sometimes they deserve it, sometimes they're just being greedy. 2. Strikes are common the world over.
Hyper, i hope you get my point now. i mean sure thing we all want more money, but there is a right and a wrong way of getting what you want. acourding to me this is not the right way.

Striking is fine. It's a lot better than other methods, like coercion for example. I don't know why you paint it as such an evil thing. The government is already moving people to private hospitals instead of public ones so that they can get adequate care. They should take the deal they are being offered, it is more than sufficient for literally doing nothing, and just get back to work.
