As a guy who should be going to college this September and isn't I'd say it is. I need to waste a year to work to make over ten grand just for ONE year.

There adressing the problem at the moment in Australia, there trying to make the Uni's run the Uni like a school not a profitalbe buisness.
Things are alot more easyier in Australia, you can borrow your UNI fee from the Government and pay them back over time, its rally easy over in france all education is free.

It's really expensive, in Holland were I live, you get a small amount of money of the goverment to study, but that is very little, and you still have to work very hard to pay your debts.

Yes, it is. I know a couple people who have had to deny themselves a further education because they can't pay for it.

Sure, you could go and serve numerous years in the military, but I think I would rather serve for my country not for my schooling.

...And scholarships are hard to get.

Definitely. What angers me the most is the "In-state vs. Out-Of-State" tuition. I visited the University of Michigan about a month ago and they gave me a lot of information, and the In-state tuition was like $15,000 and the Out-Of-State tuition was $40,000. It's kind of unfair in my opinion.

My english teacher last year, who is British, went to Oxford University in England and she said that it's inexpensive, and that's one of the best colleges in the world. So it's kinda dumb that in America you need to pay for education.

It's also ridiculous that most people who want to go on to post secondary education have to borrow loan after loan after loan and eventually become wrapped in debt for the next 20 years. Education is something everyone should have the right to, not something the government can suck us dry for.

--Enroll in a college in your state

--Compete for the many scholarships they offer

--Some states give you free 4 years of college tuition. Indiana's, for instance, gives you a 21st Century Scholarship program that, as long as you maintain a 2.0 throughout your secondary school career, you will get free 4 years of college.

--Go into the military. They pay for your college.

That's why it's so inexpensive. Elite schools usually are, because they get tons of money in donations from alumni. Rice, for instance, is one of the best deals in the country and it's also on par with Stanford. If you get into a super elite school, but can't afford it, the school will find a way to let you attend.

For instance, Harvard charges over 50k for tuition, per year. *gasp*

BUT they also hand out an average of 40k worth of grants per student.

Through in another 10k worth of scholarships (it's not like a Harvard student would have a hard time getting those) and you have a free ride to Harvard.

So, all you have to do is go to Harvard. Problem solved.

Our family just payed for my older sisters college, and it sucks because of that, I couldn't get what I wanted, but they had the right to do that because I couldn't save for what I wanted.

I live like 10 minutes away from Yale xD but those schools are difficult to get into. I can't really afford 50k a year either. I'm pretty smart, but I don't put all my effort into school so my GPA is like 3.5 What I want to do is go to a school that has good education quality and a good out-of-the-classroom life. Two schools that have that are the University of Michigan (which is REALLY hard to get into, when I went there it said on the pamphlet you need at least a 3.7 gpa, 2700 on SAT, and 27 on ACT, along with a bunch of extracurricular activities). The other is Penn State (didn't visit).

The latest figurs I've seen...

For the class of 2010 at UW Wisconsin - Madison, it cost $84,000 for 4 years.

For the class of 2018, it will cost about $120,000. It's crazy.

I'm thinking of going for 3 years at a smaller school ($60,000 - $80,000)
Class of 2014
