ACTA is an abbreviation for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.
It is an International Treaty that will be pushed to implementation by 2010. It has been discussed in secret since October 2007, and has been leaked by government officials who were against the unconstitutional, ineffective, inhumane, and unlawful nature of such a treaty.

Countries affected by this treaty include but are not limited to:
Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, The Republic of Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States

The official goal of the agreement is the international enforcement of strong intellectual property rights. Some of our concerns include the vague, amorphous manner in which âcounterfeitâ is used in many of the public comments. These uses run the gamut from undisputedly illegal products to expressly legitimate generic products. We believe that ACTA holds the potential to restrict innovation, consumer choice and freedom on the Internet by it's many restrictions and its changes to the legal front on copyrights.

The scope of ACTA includes counterfeit goods, generic medicines, Internet censorship, irrational new downloading laws and what is termed &quotiracy over the Internet".
ACTA is a treaty, which would overcome many court precedents in your own country that defines consumer rights as to "fair use" and would remove any limitations on the application of intellectual property laws. This means that ACTA would overrule any laws in your own country, and deal harsher, unfair and ineffective punishment to anyone suspected of piracy, without a trial in court. If you are just suspected of listening to songs illegally, or uploading anything illegal, you may be dealt with harshly, against the laws of your own country.

If you want to know more about ACTA, and want to know why its dangerous, you must go to the Anti-ACTA webpage: http://www.anti-acta.com

And we're too late, sorry for posting this soooo late, i realized AG didn't have an ACTA topic, so i posted it. Just to let you know, this is almost the End of the Internet. This WILL cause damage to people, a lot.

...This sounds a little chicken little like, so I decided to go to a non biased source instead, Wikipedia.

The secrecy of the whole thing is a little suspicious, but your really overreacting. From what I make of it, it sounds like the governments are going to keep an eye on the web, and if you download illegally then ? happens. If worst comes to worst, the companies of the free software will just have to start adding there contracts into the scripts. This is a very mysterious peace, but little is said about do process, though I would have to assume there is some form of court for it. The feds don't just jump threw your window and take you to prison for allegedly listing to a pirated peace of music, but actually downloading illegally, witch the proof would be easy to find. It sounds like innocents have nothing to worry about.

Say goodbye to internet neutrality. Torrent while you still can.

This is the death of free speech, and freedom on information. Gives me a good reason to shoot at them. Anyone interested in helping?

Less privacy. More shit to wade through to download stuff. Overall, more tax dollars being wasted. Not only that, but it's a way for the government to get their foot in the door so that they can censor the internet.

Anyone who believes the government should be able to censor the internet, in my opinion, needs to be shot.

I don't think Anonymous can save us from this one, guys. Looks like the good ol' days may finally be coming to a close. We should have known it was too good to last.

True, I never said it was a positive thing, but its not as apocalyptic as the OP makes it out to be.

True, but I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt. These things tend to be unpredictable and you can't really tell what the government will do to screw up.

I really do disagree with this treaty, firstly because the Internet, is basically the only thing that makes me happy. Without it, i wouldn't be. ACTA is going to kill my happiness, and so will it do with many people out there, people will get hurt. The Internet is the only place where there is a "freedom of speech", and now... we'll lose it because of that.
