If you wish to truly gain respect from Christians in debates I would suggest you did. Nothing's more fun than having read the bible when the Christian you're debating with hasn't.

Symbolism can exist in the concrete. Take for example the American flag, it has a definite concrete form but it's also a form of symbolism to some.

I would definitely recommend you do, as I said it makes contesting those practices much easier. Also many Christians will through things in that aren't really in the Bible such as purgatory and the holy trinity.

The American flag is nothing more then a symbol. What it symbolizes may hold to something concrete but the flag it self is not it.

No, it's something real, it exists on it's own. Someone who had no idea what it was would see it as just a flag, in this way something real can also display symbolism;however, the symbolism will be subjective.

It exists as nothing more then a bit of brightly colored cloth. Going back to the original comparison with Genesis this is like saying the story is real in the sense that it's words on paper.
Before you try and say it, no the US wasn't founded as a Christian nation. It was established as a secular one. "In God We Trust" and "Under God" were phrases added in the 50s.
