Hey dudes I've heard before that darwin was a racist but decided to look into it a tad so I am going to show some stuff that says he's racist and someone else show some stuff to say he wasn't.
Just so you know, both the links you provided which show Darwin as being racist are from Christian apologetics sites. These people don't believe evolution is real and have been trying to slander Darwin for years. The quotes are taken out of context and quite obviously misrepresented. If you are going to fuel a debate based on evidence for and against something it would be wise to ensure both sources are accurate and credible.
Ever heard of quote mining? It's where you take a quote and merely cut out a section of it - usually out of context - and use it to support what you're saying. Like if you said "I think that, in the eyes of Hitler, Jewish persecution was right" then I mined it to "I think that ... Jewish persecution was right" - and then attributed that to you.
Anyway - Darwin is a popular victim of this. Usually by Religious Apologetics and the like.
The term racist has been around since 1936. The concept has been in the English language since 1907. Darwin died in 1882, therefore the term racist cannot be used, thus he cannot be classified as racist.
instead of as now between the Negro or Australian and the gorilla (1874, p. 178).
hey he was around in the 1800's, fuck it. anyway, do any of you know what mormons think is the reason for black peoples skin. they believe that those are the members of heaven that, during the battle of heaven and hell, in prelife, fought less valiantly than the other people. therefore thiers and the skins of thier families would be forver stained with the blood of the fallen. or some crap. i cant say for sure tho, i think i may even be racist, i mean, i don't hate a race, i have lot of black friends, but when i see a black or mexican man with a white woman, i just get super pissed. cant help it.
Yeesh, you're right - you are a racist. Interracial marriage and/or relationships are no bad thing Y'know - for a start they help keep the bloodlines from getting stagnant.
Darwin born and raised in Victorian England, he was racist probably.
Racism only really started to be a bad thing when the civil rights movement came around in the 1960s. We look back at people thinking they were horrible people for being racist.. but in reality, it was the way their society raised them to be. It was socially acceptable to be racist. In Victorian England, England set up many colonies in India, China, and in Africa. Social Darwinism, or the belief that one's culture is superior than another, was strong because the English thought "because we can beat these people... we must a higher form of civilization"
I don't think Darwin himself was a racist, but there's a concept I learned in my AP World History class called social Darwinism, which was created by white people and said that white people evolved from black people and thus were superior to all other races. In fact, a black man named Ota Benga (I think) was put in a zoo in New York in the 19th century. Luckily, common sense prevailed and he was eventually released into the wild.
I find this thread to be somewhat ironic. Holt, you contend that Darwin is a racist, and yet:

i think i may even be racist, i mean, i don't hate a race, i have lot of black friends, but when i see a black or mexican man with a white woman, i just get super pissed. cant help it.
Efan - I didn't mean as in less biologically developed - I meant that economical and social development is a sort of 'race' or 'battle' between groups - If you're the first to get to the finish line then you've got a right to look back and laugh at the competition.
