wat about crew numbers each ship type should have a number of crew from Mantinates,bridge,marines(repel boading partys and raid planets or ships),medical staff and such
Maybe a non-playable super-strong race would be good. It would be the main challenge to defeat them (Like the Grox in Spore). Cyborgs would be nice too.
Cargo Fighter Runner ( for a smuggler) Battleship ( big, relatively slow) Beamer ( suicide) frigate( no, not the big epic things, but smaller AA ships to protect the bigger ones) Cruiser ( main ship, sleek and bristling with AA weapons) can launch fighters from. Junker *starter ship* light Cargo: smaller, faster. Medium cargo: In between, a balance. Heavy cargo: much large, massive cargo bay, not a lot of weapons, meaning needs external support. Corvette: Fast attack cruiser, is speedy and maneuverable, armed with light guns. Frigate: Warship built for speed and maneuverability but still armed fairly heavily. Destroyer: Fast and maneuverable, but enduring and long-distance. Cruiser: Large, versatile, and resistant to many forms of attack. Battlecruiser: Large warship that was heavily armed and armored. Dreadnought: An improved version of the battlecruiser, able to carry troops as well. Is also equipped with a lot of heavy armament. Battleship: Large armored warship with a main battery consisting of huge guns. Carrier: A huge warship that's made to carry lots of other, small ships that it can then deploy. Bomber: A small ship like a fighter only has heavy weapons that can take out armor or bomb parts of a planet. Rockets: Eirly ship with just a few men 12 at most that are armed. Good for takeing nearby planets/moons eirly game. Capital ship: Main ship of the fleet with you on it. Colony ship: Colonize planets with people on this. Transport light, medium, heavy: Carry men to places. Mine layer: Minimal offensive weapons but big cargo room for it's size and can lay a lot of mines to make a formidable mine field.
Other races: Scrapper: heavy azz cannons can kill fast very agile looks and probably is held together by super glue and duck tape (epic non existent armor). I think it should be able to take apart other ships to add onto itself. Pirate ship: Small nimble but packs a punch and big cargo hold.

Zhykon: A bigger race, they are not the smartest, but are quite fierce and naturally are nimble and strong. Good for pirating and for guards. Beware their custom weapons and their less than noble tactics in space nor in combat. Very ugly by most standards. They are very similar to Humans, just much bigger and different skin color ( black-orangish). Most native planets ( where they solely dominate it) are barbarian, with little law or control, so it can be quite difficult to even find a dealer alive, but the lack of laws enables for some pretty BA stuff to be sold for a price. Ships appear very scrappy and crude, but really they have developed very efficient engines and weaponry, making them a deadly threat.
Rukyan * ruk- yan*: Very intelligent, they create the best ships around these parts and can be very good spies, though most aren't. excellent as Navigators, engineers and other intelligence-orientated jobs, but as an enemy steer clear in space, they will blow you apart, and are very suspicious of foreigners ( including unreasonable prices for their ships). Also very Narcissistic and Nitrogen-breathing , making their skin a bluish color and a reptilian appearance. Native planets are very high-tech and cilivzed, with massive towers and platforms rising into the clouds ( think KotR), and if you aren't dressed like them then good luck finding a legit dealer, they are extremely suspicious of foreigners especially on their own planets. Very weak in natural strength though.
Rahznok:Very pacifist if it wasn't for the threat of pirates and other foreign threats they would never even think of having weapons on their ships. Ironically, they completely overkill their hips and selves with all kinds of nasty weapons, though their armor needs some serious work. Appear like a Martian ( white-tan skin, massive head, etc.), they specialize in plasma and explosive weapons. Best Life Support Systems and highly trained crewmen.
