LotR has too much boring stuff in-between that doesn't have much to do with the story.
In fact, everything told in the book has to do not inevitably with the story but with the background of Middle Earth...
Of course, for the young reader, the whole chapter called "About the Hobbits" can be skipped, for it doesn't bring essential things to the story...
and of course Lord of The Rings is hard to read...but it's what makes the great books....
I mean, everyon can read Eragon, it's just so easy, nothing is really complicated, relations between the characters are reduced to the minimum...result:it's boring!
Harry Potter is quite better, for the relations evolves all the years long, and stuff happens in the last three books which are quite serious and sometimes really hard...in fact the last three books are hard, really dark, but I think thy're also the bests.
Anyway, Lord of The Rings is hard to read, but is the Bible of Fantasy, and no one could ever deny it.
