He died in the 20th century.

Anyways, I think it's very hard to say who's the most influential, as there are so many different genres nowadays. Every genre has one person or band that would fit the question for the fans of that genre. Also, a very influential celebrity in one country can be pretty much unknown in another.

Anyways, to answer your question, I'd say Bad Religion. Not because I think they've done more than every other band out there, but because they're one of my favourite bands.

Arcade Fire has been surprisingly influential so far - their debut album is the main reason Coldplay changed their style for Viva La Vida, for example. They've made baroque pop cool again. And Radiohead has also changed the face of alternative music almost completely with Kid A and subsequent releases.

It's kind of hard to know who's going to be influential in the 21st century since this century has only just started... but I think Lady Gaga is one of them yes! =)

Some others are probably Beyonce, Robbie Williams (allthough I believe he actually started his solo career in the 20th century), Paramore (keep an eye on them!), P!nk (a woman with 'ballz' and The Editors...

Modest Mouse was the first band that really brought indie into the mainstream, so they do deserve mention for sure. Plus, Modest Mouse is my favorite band, so I can't not mention them somewhere.

I think in the genre of Folk Metal, the Swiss band Eluveitie is going to be a milestone. For other genres I don't really know, it is very hard for a band nowadays to be influential since there is already a big musical heritage dating from before this century.

Eluveitie is interesting in that if their influence is followed, they'll turn folk metal into something much closer to melodeath, which would be unforeseen, but interesting. I luuuuuuurve Eluveitie.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers were very influencing, By the Way (2002) and Stadium Arcadium (2006) dominated the radio waves. Also their music was very original because its a mix funk, hard rock and alternative sound.

No, Coldplay hasn't really been influential, because they themselves are more like a log of influences on the music industry. They go to show how popular the music of the likes of Radiohead and U2 continues to be, and they've provided a good measure of Arcade Fire's impact as well. Coldplay've sold well, but they really don't bring much of anything original to the table, so they don't stylistically influence other bands all that much. they've influenced the commercial world of music a ton though - they've become one of the poster-childs of modern alternative rock music.

Coldplay is actually quite original. Yes they sample styles from a few other musicians, but who hasn't? Everyone gets their influence from somewhere. And U2 is my favorite band of all time. I would've said U2, but they were more influential in the 80's and 90's than the 2000's
