Brom is my favorite character. Very wise and always thinking on his feet. He was one of the few characters I think the movie got right.

>.> Well I'm going to be the bad guy here and point out all the flaws in this series of novels, well the general ones at least. Before that I will admit Eragon is a good read.

Paolini has introduced too many elements into his plot. If he plans to finish this series in one more novel he will have to tie up an enormous amounts of loose ends from the dethroning of Galbatorix, to the exile of Eragon, which we all know will happen. Furthermore, he has to play out the new rider along with the lives of other characters such as Roran and Arya. Frankly unless he either makes the book over 1000 pages long he'll have to cut out massive amounts of plot, or leave the reader with unsatisfying endings to his various subplots.

Moving on. The characters. I've read a lot of novels and I have rarely came across a more dissatifying character than Eragon. Paolini offers no growth for his character. Up to now I have seen nothing but a person who whines and complains over every detail. There are points where Eragon should harden a little to what his life has brought him, yet it falls into the same pattern of the "tragic hero". The whole love affair that isn't a love affair is getting old seeing as he hasn't got the message yet despite the obvious denial. Besides this no other character changes except Roran, and honestly he is the only decent character in the series although he's turning a little whiney at point, but at least he mans up.

Continuation problems. My main problem with this is how the novels were written. For the first two the plot was stretched out over months at a time and things felt smooth within this rythm. Then came Brisingr which took place in about a month or two. It jarred the flow of the entire plot, not just the novel itself. Then there's how Paolini displays Saphira. When talking to Eragon we see and intelligent understanding character. When Paolini gives us her point of view we see an idiotic beast.

And finally Brisingr itself. The novel accomplishes nothing. Yes the Raz'ac are killed, yes we learn some information about the dragons and Galbatorix at the end. HOWEVER we did not need to read an entire novel to reach this point! Nothing substantial happens plot wise. All this novel is is filler. Minor plot details occur that could have been written in in earlier books had Paolini altered the plot ever so slightly, as in not everyone treating Eragon as a child, even though they expect great things from him >.> *sighs*

Despite my critism I enjoyed the novels as a read, but they are not as fanatastic as everyone thinks. Personally though, I like Brom, he was another true character.

..a... genuine review of the novel. If there was a thumbs-up or merit button, i'd press it.

I concur, Eragon the movie was absolute garbage, and it was completely disloyal to the book. I don't think Paolini had anything to do with it, to be honest.
Roran is my favorite character by far. whats your favorite character?

I don't really have one, but if I had to choose, I'd have to say Angela, purely because she's kind of funny.

And Wolf already took the words out of my mouth(which sounds really unsanitary) but I'll fill in some of the points he missed.

I concur, Brisingr was filler. I mean, he spends like half of Brisingr just giving Eragon a new friggin sword, and honestly, who didn't see that one coming? And for god's sake, who wants to read about sewing lace with magic in a flipping fantasy book?!
And I like her, but Angela's predictions in the first book totally ruined the suspense for the whole series. I mean, she practically said outright that Eragon and Arya were going to end up together, which gives Eragon carte blanche for that pathetic whiny little begging act he calls courtship for what seems the entirety of Eldest.
And Oromis...well, he just seemed way too perfect for my tastes. No character flaws at all, unless you count his and Glaedrs' crippled-ness, which I don't.

I really like Angela: she's so unusual! Everytime I read a passage where she makes an appearance, I have to stop myself from laughing out loud. I think she's going to be very important in the 4th book. I read a chapter of the book on the website, and it was about the werecats, so Solembum will obviously play a more important role than he has been doing now.

The movie made me pretty pissed; but I love the series. My favorite character WAS Ajihad, then Oromis, so I'm just staying away from favorites for a while. But I dislike Angela and Murtagh {***}.

Well since we're on the topic of the movie I'll review that as well.

At best the movie was amusing. When I first watched this movie I had never heard of Eragon before and the only reason I decided to read the novel was to compare to this movie. Needless to say, after comparison I found the movie lacking. While I do not care for the numerous subplots in Paolini's work, in Eragon the story is well done and nicely rounded into a true adventure fantasy. The movie steals away from this by stretching the events with a 2 year jump and a feathered dragon. The move further derides the plot by tearing almost every moment of wit and action from it. Instead they replace it with a look at Galbatorix's motives and person, a anticlimactic battle and turning the Varden into little more than savages. As stated before the movie has undermined all the plot within Eragon without giving anything in return. Simply for entertainment value it gains 2 stars out of five

You give the movie a high rating Wolf. They did not even have the sets or the characters true to the book.

It entertained me. And I'm going with my original rating after I saw before I read the books. If I were to give it a rating now I'd say 1.5

Actually, Harry Potter, I see no reason why that thread would be labeled as better. In fact, this thread was created before that one, so I think this one gets superiority. So...yeah. Neither thread is really better, if not this one, because this one was created before the other. So technically, the other would actually be a repeat. Case closed.

I really am glad I read the books before I saw the movie, I honestly had to fight through it to watch the end, and actually laughed at how wrong they got the movie. It is a good series, and I will finish it when if ever get the chance, but I have since moved on to a much better series methinks (wheel of time)

I think that the Inheritance Cycle is AWESOME, but the whole thing about Eragon loving Arya's been going on for what, two and a half books, and she's been rejecting him for two books(in the other half she was unconscious) and he doesn't seem to be getting the message that she doesn't want to move him. Really, Eragon, just shut up about that whole thing and go find a new girlfriend who isn't 70 years older than you.
