This happens to me all the time. I'm typing on my laptop and my thumb will swipe across the touchpad. It causes the cursor to move backward into what I was typing and I end up inserting my sentence in the middle of my last sentence. Something this:
"This happens totypingon my all the time."
Oddly, this has trained me to left my wrists and thumb up when typing.
Something like that happens to me, only I don't know why it skips up half a page in Word and puts my sentence there. I commend you for working it out >_> I feel stupid.
Typing the old you're-supposed-to-do-it-this-way prevents that.
Well, my touchpad is in the middle of the laptop so I don't worry about touching it.

I wish the touchpad wasn't so sensitive.
Oh, to me its too slow :P (and unaccurate), that why I use good old mouse (and playing games with touchpad is a pain, any other tied?).Btw you can swap yur mouse/touchpad settings in the control panel.

I have this same problem, and sometimes I write a really long text and I slightly touch the pad and all of the text gets marked, I write one letter and everything's gone.
My pad is slightly to the left but I overcame this problem by using the disable mouse pad button that most new laptops have.
My half brother stuck gum on the touch pad (He didn't sit right for a week) And afer spenind two hours trying to get it off, I bought a mouse, covered the touchpad with a small plastic peice, and turned it off. It's like there is no touchpad now.
@Pazx: If you ever take a typing class or read some sort of typing book they tell you that proper technique is to lift your wrists and not let them rest on the desktop or keyboard. It makes typing more accurate I believe or it helps reduce strain when typing (Carpel Tunnel) . It takes more energy though so I usually rest my wrists.

My touchpad is right in the middle, however my laptop is a bit smaller compared to some my keyboard isn't full size. This means everything is closer together, which puts my thumbs by the touchpad.
I do use a mouse though. I never thought to just disable the touchpad. Although sometimes my computer wont sense that the mouse is plugged in (in when I switch the usb port) so I have to use the touchpad to restart my computer.
Don't know about your laptop, but on mine I just press two buttons on the keyboard to disable / enable the touchpad. I pretty much have to disable mine, because the morons placed it to the left, almost directly below WASD. Before I found the disable/enable button I taped a piece of cardboard over it.

I'm far too lazy to do that. My wrists are resting on the computer right now. My thumbs are resting on space and the right alt (which I don't think is normal for me, I seem to be pressing it alot) and they're extremely close to the touchpad. My piano teacher doesn't like that >_>
It doesn't really affect me that much (however it happened when I was leavng a comment on knight's profile just a few moments ago), I use a mouse but never disable the touchpad and I use it if I move the laptop say, to my bed or the couch.
Plus I love the touchpad's double tap to click ability
mine is directly in the center, which is pretty awesome since both of my hands can rest on the laptop and the touchpad isn't so close my thumbs get in the way. Also both my thumbs rest on the space button, don't know bout yours >.>

meh i type a whole lot faster and with less mistakes doing it the unconventional way.
Well, laptop typing is actually more easier than typing in a keyboard of what people say. For me, yes. I think it's because the keyboard in the laptop is smaller, but for people with long fingers like me, probably they'll use the keyboard for the desktop, but for me, a laptop keyboard.
