What event do you think, was the most important, the most astounding or shocking? Inventions play a big part in this thread as well as events.

In no real order:

The Establishment of the Chinese Civilization
Founding of Buhdism
Foudning of Toaism
Chinese invention of the first clock
The Samurai being founded
Japanese and Chinese isolationist policies
Mongol invasions
The Three Kingdoms period in China
The Boxer Revolution
Opening conflicts of WWII (Japan and China)

I realize there are more events especially with the more southern cultures, but my main study is Japan and China

9/11 is not at all a major historical event.

It did shape the previous decade considerably, though I wish not to speculate on events as recent as nine years ago.

Right, I'll cover some 18th century events here.

Seven Years' War
War of American Independence
The French Revolution
War of Spanish Succession
Age of Enlightenment

Two inventions I recall are the steam engine (Newcomen and Watt) and smallpox vaccination (Jenner).

the invention of AIDS

Invention? Umm... the HIV virus is an evolved form of SIV(Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) As we are so closely related to other simians it was relatively simple for HIV to evolve to survive and flourish within the human body.

The invention of language (whenever that was) is probably one of the most important events in history. Without it one could still communicate on an blunter level (more based on instinct such as how animals interpret each others body signals and to some extent sounds), but with it one could convey a thought, an specific idea to another person in a direct way. Its like spoken language breaches a barrier between people's minds.

@ Walker I suppose he said the "invention" of AIDS because according to some -conspiracy- theories HIV was created in a bioweapons laboratory, perhaps as an agent of mass murder or an accident.

Of course though this theory is quite unlikely.

It makes sense that HIV was created to stop the rapid growth of the human race, even thought it's full of crap.

Yeah, considering we've managed to trace the evolution of the HIV genome back many, many years, before humans had the capability to bioengineer anything.

[sarcasm]Since HIV is genetically engineered, that's just more evidence of alien visitation and that they created all life on this planet.[/sarcasm]

OOOH I forgot about that Mage. It would certainly make sense to use biological warfare to take over the planet, especially because an alien life form would almost certainly not have any genetic similarities in their genome, at least not enough to make them susceptible to diseases tailored to our bodies. **** e.t.s...

Most important event in history has to be the agricultural revolution. The Agricultural Revolution led to a complete change in society. For millions of years, humans lived as nomads. About 14,000 years ago, in the Middle East, humans developed agriculture which allowed us to settle down. Without Agriculture, we'd still be nomads.

An honorable mention would be the invention of the Printing Press by Johannes Gutenberg. It completely changed the course of modern history. It changed the way we could exchange information and educate ourselves or others. It allowed an unparalleled level of expression and a completely new level of speech.
