ELFEN LIED is the best anime ive ever seen the storyline is very fascinating although there are a diffrent opinions on this anime beacause of intense graphic violence and nudity shown in the anime its story is such a bittersweet tale i couldnt stop watching and watched all the 12 epsiodes in one day but like i mentioned before and like Pazx said it contains adult themes but nevertheless the best screenplay ive ever seen
Gantz, Air Gear, tenjho tenge, Code Geass, tengenn toppa gurren lagann, over drive, and finally hunter x hunter. Are all my 5/5 out of animes. I've fully watched 64 anime though and i am caught up or have dropped an additional 75. So it's really hard to settle on any tops.
Pazx - Avatar is NOT an Anime. It may be in the same style but it isn't made in Japan and so doesn't meet the Western worlds definition of an anime. Sorry.

I agree with slipsoccer. Dragon Ball Z was the first one that I watched too. I always liked it. Except for the GT version of it. They overdid it in there. The only thing that I liked in GT was the super saiyan 4. That was bad***. I still watch DBZ. But not as much as when there were new episodes coming out every week.
Yu gi oh got gay after they released all the new versions of it. I liked the original. The pokemon original was good too. But after the years they added all the useless crap.
I also have to disagree, the name itself defines it, anime is short for Japanese Animation. Style is a part of but not the sole part of what makes something an anime. Here's a reference from Meriam and Webster

Mine would now be: DBZ all of it except for GT. Avatar the last airbender Yu gi oh. Before it got bad with the new versions of it and took out all the original characters.
