OK, I'm here to define CLASSIC ROCK! The Following bands ARE Classic Rock:
ABBA AC/DC The Beatles Boston Cream CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) David Bowie The Doobie Brothers The Doors The Eagles Elton John Heart John Fogerty Kiss Led Zeppelin Lynyrd Skynyrd Meat Loaf Petra Pink Floyd Queen The Ramones The Rolling Stones Rush Scorpions The Steve Miller Band Styx Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Van Halen The Who ZZ Top And all the one-hit wonder or lesser known bands of Classic Rock (Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper, Foghat, etc.)
And what are we going to discuss here? Your list? Hmm...
Well, I can see that you count Deep Purple as a one-hir wonder aswell, whilst it got popular with multiple numbers, besides just smoke on the water.
And you know, you can't list classic rock, for it is way bigger than that. It also depends what you call classic. Some people count old songs as classic, whilst others only call up the legendary.
Besides, I just noticed Black sabbath is missing. They ARE the founders of metal, and they are definitly classic rock guys.
Thinking of it, why is there no such thing as classic metal?
Anyway, enough for me. This thread will probally be locked since there is not really a question asked, more like a list of bands you think are classic. The only thing discussed here will be whether which bands would appear here and disappear, and which will come in the future. But all that is explained in other threads which would make this a duplicate.
No, this is good music discussion. I wish there were more threads like this.
However, what makes you think ABBA is classic rock? Personally, I would give them a disco/pop genre. I'd say some of the bands you list are questionable on dumping them into classic rock.
Journey is also good classic rock, if not one of the top-tier rock bands.
If you want a "real" definition of classic rock n' roll, you will find that it originated and evolved in the United States in the 1940s and 50s which combined many blues, jazz, country, and gospel elements and styles.
Frank, the definition of classic rock you gave was closer to rockabilly, I think a more accurate description would be the majority of the music from the late seventies and the eighties.
@ grimmi- the Ramones are right on the border line of that. So compromise! "Classic Punk".
Now to the list. Where are Aerosmith, Bon Jovi (at least older Jovi), Def leppard? I would defiantly consider those bands classic rock. As for the one hit wonders, Deep purple has already been covered, but the other bands on that are also not one hit wonders (except foghat). Alice Cooper had "School's out", "eighteen", "welcome to my nightmare", and more that became famous. Stephenwolf was a two hit wonder, with hits in "magic carpet ride" and "born to be wild". And one last note, why is Jimi Hendrix not on the list.
Besides, I just noticed Black sabbath is missing. They ARE the founders of metal, and they are definitly classic rock guys.
Sorry but the band Diamond head is more like the founder of metal, they were the inspiration behind mettalica and other big 4 bands as those big 4 bands were the inpiration behind the newer mettal bands we have today. Mentioning diamond head I see there was neglect to put them into your list sad but their only big song was "am I evil" wich was one of the first dark rock/metal songs.
Classic rock is mostly rock ranging from the 60's to the 70's. Traditional classic rock usually ends in the early 80's. However, mid-80s songs are some times also considered classic rock.
Personally I don't consider the Beatles a rock band, in my opinion they were mostly pop.
