Actually the main purpose of this thread is for me to announce to all those who (probably a very small number) enjoy stratovarius' music, they are releasing a new album soon... they just released a teaser of 2 songs w/ demo versions of both and two live songs (total of 6). the new album is due in january :3
my favorite songs by them are posted on my page, but my all time favorite is arguably
Eagleheart. its one of my motivational songs of choice
I'm glad that someone here likes power metal. I recently started listening to Stratovarius, and they're great. My favorite song has to be Hunting High And Low.
As for Sonata Arctica, they seem to stray off of my definition of power metal. I started listening to power metal on the internet, maybe, a month or two ago. Since then, I've like the Blind Guardian/Iron Savior styles.
But as for Stratovarius, I don't even have one album yet, so I can't answer that question lol.
Cool, a new album I hope they didn't change too much, but I guess I'll have to find it out myself.. they're coming to Switzerland together with Helloween on 31th of January btw, I'm looking forward to an epic concert :3 (plus Sonata Arctica on 8th of march, gonna be a good year )
yea.... i'm in school at those times and i'm in the states so no traveling across the world :'(...
sonata arctica is what i call symphonic metal... their original stuff was poweresque. Stratovarius gets my adrenaline going, but SA makes me think harder about their lyrics... and there are alot more emotions involved than just the adrenaline rush.
you might could try Cain's Offering... they're a fusion of both SA and Strato... literally... old band members from both comprise the majority of the band. \\m/ (O_o) \\m/

All their earlier albums where most definitely power metal imo. Unia was the first album in the new style, and their latest album shows they're gonna stay in that new genre, whatever it can be qualified as. Symphonic is not a bad idea, though for me symphonic is more Rhapsody-style, while Sonata's new style is kinda darker. Not quite gothic but in that kind of direction I think. I had trouble accepting they've left their earlier genre at first, but now I know they're not coming back I found my peace with it XD
well there was an interview that is referred alot on youtube in which people say tony said that they just couldn't express themselves with music like that anymore, so they're doing what they like as opposed to just making music that they don't care for. Everyone has their phases. I'm sure that their last power song hasn't been unleashed just yet.... they're just going to be fewer and farther in between
At least I hope Strato stays true to their powerful melodic and fast music. And I think that, to the contrary of Tony, the singer of Strato really does feel comfortable with high pitched voice and fast tempo, so there probably won't be too radical changes..
