Grunge all the way! Kurt Cobain with Nirvana... Alice in Chains! Rock has some good but they have all good songs of the 90s! Who did rock have that was as successful as them?
Grunge is one of the only genres I can't stand listening to. I've been trying to figure out for a while what's so appealing about it.
But this thread, aside from being 3 years old, is sort of pointless, as grunge is just a branch of rock.

If that's your argument, you clearly know nothing of the music world. I'll give you 4 rock groups and 1 rock singer off the top of my head that were clearly more successful than Nirvana or Alice in Chains.
The Beatles The Rolling Stones The Beach Boys Bob Dylan Led Zeppelin
There are more, but I don't feel like proving a point to someone who has been inactive for 3 years.
To be honest, I only like Soundgarden from the Grunge genre; might I add, they're very good. I don't understand what anyone would find appealing about Nirvana.
I don't like a lot of Rock; my favorite would have to be Rush. In my opinion, they're the greatest band of all time. There are a few other very good Rock bands, so I have to say Rock is better than Grunge.
@Ernie Have you listened to a good amount of Soundgarden? They have a good variety in their songs.

Technically, Grunge is a sub- genre of rock, so asking that is like asking "yellow, or the rainbow". But Gunge was incredibly short lived while rock, as a whole, lives on. 'nuff said.

For Rock, you have songs like Deep Purple's Burn, Rush's Limelight, and Styx's Love Is the Ritual. Sure, Rock can sound very different, but there is a general sound about it to me.

Dude, Rock covers basically EVERYTHING with a guitar. There is no way to classify rock, like I said "yellow versus the rainbow" Rock includes soft rock, hard rock, pop rock, grunge, punk, metal, hardcore, and that's only scratching the surface.
I agree with the first posts about Grunge doing it for me simply because of Nirvana, but overall i think rock is a better genre, it includes a lot more than being limited to Grunge.
They as in grunge? I beg to differ on the contrary, I play with every word that you say. Pop-punk soared in the 90s with Green Day and The Offspring having chart topping albums in 1994. Rock also was popular with R.E.M. breaking through in the late 80s early 90s and the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocketing to super-stardom with Blood Sugar Sex Magik. You also had Sublime's self titled album that was incredibly successful. Also who could forget Alternative Rock with Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Jane's Addiction and The Stone Temple Pilots. Now I don't hate grunge, I love it, but Rock need 90s credit too.
hip hop/rap, metal, grunge, punk, indy/alternatice, ska, classic rock, doo=wap, reggae, R&B, pop, Funk, disco, electronica, its ALL rock music.
Technically, no... that's not all rock music. Rap is definitely not, neither is funk, disco, do-wop, R&B, some types of pop can be pop rock, and reggae is stretching it... Rock more defines bands from The Beatles, beach Boys, and Elvis to Black sabbath, Led Zeppelin, def lepard, lynard skynard, metallica, slayer, ZZ Top, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Foo Fighters, System of a Down, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, all the way through.
I will have to go with Hard Rock, not just plain ol' rock. Hard rock has more electrics and more power and energy in the songs! Rock is more contemplative, which is good form time to time, but I prefer the harder stuff.
I also enjoy classical, Jazz, Electric, and a variety of other genres; go figure.
