I'm not saying the guy wasn't a Great Guitarist, He deffinatly had huge influence on Music and his improvs were great. But, to be honest, I don't think he's thee Single greatest guitarist ever, he's way up there, sure, But not the greatest. I know I'm going to get some bad feedback, but I can take it.
If you are a guitar player or even have any sense of guitar playing you would understand the reasons that make up the essence of why Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarists of all time...
Case Closed
No one said he wasn't good, just a little overrated, he's in the top five on my my list. A better tittle for this, I relies now, would be "Is Jimi Hendrix the Number One Guitarist of all Time?"
True, I learned most of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album in a couple days, but playing left-handed is a bit difficult. He's one of the greatest left-handed guitarist I know.
Now back on topic about Jimi... Personally I think there are better guitarists out there than him, but he was definitely an extraordinary guitarist. He had solid riffs, awesome solos, and great passion for the guitar.
Although I think influence ranks him high on most lists, I believe they're better guitarist than him. Is he overrated? I don't think so. If I'm not mistaken, Jimi also played left-handed?

In my opinion, I don't think so. He is very skilled and his music isn't that bad. I don't care for it but that doesn't mean he isn't good at what he does.
I honestly agree, I think Jimi Hendrix is overrated. I find his music to sound like "stoner" music(by which I mean the music itself sounds stoned), and "Purple Haze" is the perfect example of this. I think he sounds ok, but I would certainly never put him on my list of bands I recognize (see my prof).

Well, I kinda agree with that statement, but it was basically the "new wave" in rock at the time. That genre was called psychedelic rock, back when just about everyone did LSD. Although that drug isn't as popular now, if majorly effected music. Keep in mind this was music that was recorded decades ago. Of course it's not gonna sound like modern music.
I'm all too aware of that (seriously,. look at the list on my profile), but what I mean is that out of all the Psychedelic rock, Jimi Hendrix is the one guy who doesn't really seem that way to me. And yes, I am aware that almost every single major band has used some kind of drug (except "Weird" Al Yankovic and maybe Tom Petty, not sure about him, but he does smoke...)
Jimi is the man! He had to play a right handed guitar upside down to play with his left hand. That Takes talent which most likely means he was self taught. Truly amazing.

But he restrung it, he didn't play the strings upside down. The only real problem that could arise from that is the cutaway doesn't allow access to higher frets.

[/quote] Also using the tremolo would be a little awkward. Unless he played on something with a double cutaway like a Gibson SG or something with generally low action that wouldn't be too difficult. I think he only used a Stratocaster (mostly), but if you've listened to most of his songs, they don't go really high anyways. So he probably didn't even go near the cutaway.
I dont agree he is overrated, i think u are missing the point why is he considered the best guitarist. Its not because of the speed of playing or technics, its because he expanded the way u can play or look at that instrument. He introduced guitar feedback (the high sound of the guitar when put close to the amp) and he even modified his own pedals and invented some, like Octavio and modified Wah-wah fuzz pedal. He influenced lots of the music to came after him, the whole alternative noise guitar playing (sonic youth, nirvana, butthole-surfers, spaceman 3 etc.) So i think he has his Throne for a reason.
truley the greatest overall rock guitarist i think is the proper thing to say, because i could name many guitarist outside of the genre to be more influential and overall better then him.
