2010 is almost over, and thank god for that, because this decade has seen the death of music as we know it. I'll give credit to the year 2000 for not giving us a world of fail, but that's when it really started. It's like we've gone back to the 70's and 80's of one hit wonders, except this time the music isn't all that impressive, in fact it's complete and utter crap. Let's wind back the clocks to the one hit wonders, one of my favourites is Video Killed the Radio Star. Now, someone is inevitably going to pick up that I like this song, but am bashing other songs for doing what this song does, which is repeat the same lyrics over and over again. However, unlike today back then that song required something I call talent. Let's move on.
Rap. Let me explain this VERY carefully to you rap fans. Rap is NOT music. Rap is poetic verse filled with swearing, degrading women and whining on how hard life is. And yet these rappers are millionaires. Not only is this hypocrisy, it's stupidity worthy of a politician. Rap can't be classified as music because what's making the music? There is no music it's a beat and there's rhymes, most of these rhymes either are forced OR they DON'T RHYME! Seriously someone like 50 Cent should not be idolized as a "great artist" or a "great musician" these people slaughter language simply to make a new language that doesn't even make sense half the time. TALKING TO A BEAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU'RE MAKING MUSIC! It means you're reciting terrible poetry.
RnB. Also known as rhythm and blues. The problem with this genre aside from making terrible songs that talk about being rich or some strange love affair or something a normal person cannot comprehend? There's a lack of rhythm and last time I checked, most the songs do not qualify under the genre of blues.
Techno. It's a machine making sounds. More strange talking to beats. End of story.
Pop/Whatever Lady Gaga and them are. Where do I even begin? Justin Beiber, Kesha, Lady Gaga and whoever else has risen from the Land of Failtastic Music. Again as with rap there's no music here. You plugged in some sounds, made a techno beat and began talking to it. I could pull Joe Average from the street and do the same thing with him if I desired, then throw it on youtube and watch as the great mass of stupidity that is humanity applaud him for his "wonderful music". Not only does this genre require the barest of minimum talent it also makes absolute NO FREAKIN SENSE. For example Kesha and I quote "I wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy". On what level of sane do you even qualify that as...well, anything? I'm not adverse to some lyrics not making sense for instance Our Lady Peace has some strange ones. Take their song Carnival one of the lines reads: "Sign says yoga class for cats" however there's a song behind that line, and some type of meaning. Kesh and company have yet to show me anything but, well I'm no longer sure. I'm out of words for this genre, it's beyond anything I can remotely understand. How it's classyfied as music remains a mystery.
So, what happened to how music used to be? You know bands that got together, had some form of skill vocally and intrumentally and had to prove that they could actually create music. Think back to the 70's, 80's and 90's all those rock bands, and yeah the origins of techno and hell, even rappers had some form of music back then. But now it's as if the world of music has degenerated in finding either the strangest people, or those that look like plastic and having them talk to a beat about things that don't even make sense. I'm just glad guys like Our Lady Peace haven't left us quite yet.
You say 60 percent of all rock songs are about love. So if every band up there has made over 50 songs, then I assume 30 of them are about love. Start. Name 30 songs for each band that is up there.
no not 60 percent of rock songs i mean bands. and i dont mean love particullarly, i jsut mean about the opposite sex in general. like you cant honestly tell me that there is a rock band out there that hasnt written atleast 1 song about the opposite sex
Okay . . . this was the death of mainstream music. Underground/indie music is beautifully amazing these days! I mean, look at all the great underground metal releases . . . Alcest, Haken, new Agalloch, new Kamelot, new Pin-Up Went Down, new Sigh, and new Pain of Salvation (which I am lumpin in wit hthe metvlz crowd). On the indie side of things, we had new LCD Soundsystem, Gonjasufi, Women, Yann Tiersen (again not really indie but I am lumping him in here), Girls (Women and Girls are both bands, yes), Sleigh Bells (screw the haters), Phantogram, Deerhunter, Glasser, Four Tet, Flying Lotus, new Black Keys, and NEW BEACH HOUSE NEW BEACH HOUSE NEW BEACH HOUSE YAYAYAYAYAY . . . ahem. There's plenty of wonderful rap and hip-hop music . . . you just have to dig a little deeper than the Top 40. And techno? It requires just as much musicianship to produce good techno or any good electronic music as it does to play some power chords, hit some cymbals, and sing about loneliness.
Wolf, not only do you completely misunderstand all the genres you discussed, you fail to realize the existence of so much great music in this decade even in the despised hiphop genre.
Listen to this Madvillain duo with MF DOOM and Madlib for example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewc1hixzYPY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpaonSDPw7Y&feature=channel
You might now like the music, but I, among with many other people I know enjoy this. The guy has the illest flow, and none of his raps are about degrading women, or whatever the hell you mentioned.
Techno music as a "machine making sounds". Lol. I think you meant electronic music, but whatever. First of all, that's not entirely true, because 1: Daft Punk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFZjqVnWBhc (see the instruments?) There's lot of electronic artists that emerged in the 2000s who make plenty of good music.
and 2, machines have made everything easier. Just because traditional instruments don't exist, doesn't mean music production doesn't require skill. Let me see you make a track equal to that of a well known producer like Armin Van Buuran. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6Gt2D5mbrU
Right no instruments are used, but it is music in its every sense. It includes composition, form, melody, rhythm, etc. And most importantly, ITS PLEASURABLE TO LISTEN TO.
Yes Mainstream music that's played on the radio sucks, but there is a vast amount of music beyond that. **** and its not like bands disappeared. No, music just has evolved to take new forms and create new sounds, as it always does.
Now stop trying to be a total hipster and enjoy the tunes.
I believe what you have classified as the death of music is more the rise of Top 40-ism. There are plenty of amazing bands out there of every musical genre, and every musical artist has *some* form of talent, but when you have artists that no longer write their own lyrics and labels that push out new albums on a regular basis, you tend to get a lot of filler crap music mixed in with a few songs that are either incredibly catchy or actually good in their own right. To me Top 40-ism is what is wrong with music, making a song to top the billboards and line your own pockets.
well, i've noticed a lot of good observations as well as a lot of embarrassingly juvenile and immature comments of this subject. while in technical terms every one of these genres IS music, what i feel personally and what i think a lot of other people were trying to complain about is the lack of talent and creativity in today's music. all too often mainstream top 40 songs are really anything with a catchy beat, but too many of these songs have very little meaning or feeling in them. one cannot define an entire genre like rap or techno as just simply "not music". it is music, whether you like it or not, and to some people, it's their favorite type of music, thinking the exact opposite of what many people are saying here. i usually can't stand rap, and i will agree that too much of it is just about sex drugs and money, but so many songs are about so much more than that. ok, i'm gonna sound a little cliche, but take a look at eminem. many of his songs aren't specific to themes or feelings, but many of them are just him expressing his true feelings and emotions in the only way he knows how to, by rhyming. don't just declare something that means so much to some people as a big lie without looking deeper than the given stereotype. and even though it's not my personal taste, RnB is actually one of the most musically soulful expressions out there. Techno is different, but it still holds similar music theory techniques like any other genre. they use synthesizers and drum machines, but much of the stuff you find out there is extremely creative. sometimes it's a simple beat, many times its an ever-so-slightly changing beat and rhythm with numerous layers that most people dont realize just how long it takes to create something like that. pop; ok, i honestly cannot stand today's pop, but yes, it is still music. of course, maybe there might not be as much creativity and skill involved with auto-tune and back beats and repeating lyrics, but it still takes time to create. now, i personally believe that it is the creativity and skill that has extremely decreased over this decade, but i can guarantee you that even though you may hate all of these genres, there is at least one song that you WILL like, it's just not an obvious one. i find the more you dig and search for lesser known bands and songs, you will find a gem that will surprise you. stop stereotyping and keep an ear and your mind open to new ideas and songs. For Example i really don't like techno or electronica that much at all, but recently i found one of these gems that i just love. did you see that recent youtube video "Filmography 2010"? well i found teh first song from that video Nostrand by Ratatat LISTEN TO IT. notice the synthesizer layers, combined with the real bass guitar, and guitar layers. if you can listen to the entire thing and honestly tell me that it doesnt sound creative at all, then the music isn't the problem, it's just your inability to accept other genres of music as actually music.
Combination hipster metalhead, hold the skinny jeans and the greasy fata** motif 8D
I feel like this wasn't the best year for metal, because new Blind Guardian and Atheist (blergh) and Kamelot were kinda disappointing compared to the rest of their work, but 2010 was one of the shining moments of indie music.
