Heavy rock, but as "heavy rock" got heavier and louder, the term metal appeared to distinguish it from heavy rock to metal. Some "heavy rock" bands got merged into the metal genre and some heavy rock bands stayed in the same genre. Black Sabbath was one of them. Metallica was one of the bands that defined metal.
@Kevin: You're completely off, man. Metallica didn't define metal at all, that's ridiculous. They didn't even form until 1981. The NWOBHM movement helped define metal.
Metallica, arguably, helped form the heavy metal subgenre known as "Thrash Metal". There were hundreds, if not thousands, of metal bands/albums released before Metallica even started playing music. Do some research next time.

Haha, don't get butthurt. Emmure are more closely related to modern hardcore than metal. The only reason they get labeled as deathcore/metalcore is because of the harsh vocals. And I've never even seen someone mistake ADTR as metal. They're a pop punk band with breakdowns thrown in.
