Okay, so a while ago my appendix burst and I had a drain put in to clear up the abcess, but my appendix was not removed yet. Sometime soon I am supposed to have a laproscopic procedure done (where they "fish it out" with a pin or something) and was wondering if anyone knew what that was like compared to the drain.

I myself do not know the experience, but my mom sure does. Her appendix burst, but the scary part was she didn't know until 1-2 weeks afterwards, because she was complaining of horrible pains in her abdominal area. Long story short, if she didn't get it checked, she would have died. She was drained (quite a bit!) but I'm pretty sure she didn't have a second procedure to remove the appendix; I think it was all in one, with a couple days of bed rest. Not very positive, but I *think* it's not too bad of an experience, as you would be given anesthetic for the treatment. So you wouldn't feel any pain from "fishing the appendix out".

I'm not trying to corner you into submission by posting relevant videos of somewhat graphic medical procedures, but anyway: Laparoscopic Appendectomy.

I don't know much myself, I'm sorry. Though it seems the laparoscopic procedure is less invasive than the "open" one. Apparently, since the incisions made to you are smaller, the scarring is reduced which makes for a better appearance.

Oh, and you're given general anesthesia as Frank stated. In other words, you'll be unconscious.

I wouldn't care. They put you under anesthesia, anyway. The appendix is the only vestigial organ humans have so I asked my parents to get mine removed when I was 14. The appendix can get infected and diseases come up. It is really just stupid to still have it.

Would you like to fork over the thousands of dollars to have my appendix removed, Kevin? /point

That's why I went to Argentina. They have universal healthcare down there.

My appendix is still healthy and in situ, but as a doctor, I could answer your question.

Dude, that's nasty. How long did you have tummy pains before you got checked out?

wondering if anyone knew what that was like compared to the drain.

Assuming the inflammation has gone down enough for them to perform the procedure and that there are no further complications, it shouldn't be bad at all. Laparoscopic means they do it through a keyhole (or two), so you'll have minimal wounds. You'll likely be under general anaesthetic (unless you're allergic to it, in which case you'll get a local), meaning you probably won't even remember the procedure. Best case scenario: You'll wake up with maybe a couple of stitches/staples and a dressing, you'll be on mild/moderate painkillers for a day or two and then you'll go home and they might give you parace- I mean acetaminophen tablets. You should be feeling perfectly fine a few days after the operation. Complications include them somehow having trouble removing the appendix and converting to an open operation (larger wound, longer recovery time), infection after the procedure, and issues with anaesthetic (rare), but appendicectomies are a common procedure most places and the complication rate is maybe somewhere around 1% on average. Besides it sounds like you went and had your complication already, lol.

I had a laproscopic done for my appendix a couple years ago. I have three small(less then an inch long) scars on my stomach compared to the three or four inch hole my dad got twentyish years ago. I went home the day after the surgery and I had some pain while walking for about a week. You should be fine after the operation is over.
Good luck to you.

Hmm.. To put it simply, sometimes it comes down to surgery or death.

I doubt you would say that if you ever get appendicitis.

What is the big deal about surgery? In the end, you usually end up way better?

@knight_34
It appears that cenoxium has chosen death/extreme pain.

Well thanks for the tips, I appreciate the help.

Most people don't burst their appendixes just to experience the "thrill" of having it removed...

I'll just keep healty and wait for the Nanobots to come. Which, I can read from the 'New Scientist', won't be too long. Besides, you need Appendix to eat plants, that is its original purpose.

Actually, no you don't. Your ancestors did, and your ancestors were monkeys. Since when do you see people eating bay leaves or sage? It is vestigial.
