Sigh, all I can think about when I read this is the movie "Core," which is in standing with the most idiotic movie ever. To me the fireworks litterally scaring the birds to death makes more sense than some electromagnetic field killing them.

birds sense magnetic fields... google it. i don't know how they use it or interpret it... but from what i've read its been shown to have some effect.

if the local area decides to have a EMP derp moment then it has the potential to disorient those that can sense said derp. if disoriented mid flight such a creature may possibly lose coordination and fall... said fall may have great enough impact to kill the creature.

we could test the fireworks theory... cage a few of them in close proximity to ground zero and pop off a few mortars and fire crackers... if they don't die then that may be evidence for another cause...

It's already been confirmed, and the information released, that it was due to fireworks. The issue is that these birds are night blind, so when they were startled from their resting areas and flew away from the noise they were unable to see trees, houses, and even the ground and as such collided with these objects at full speed, killing themselves.

So their are bit like parrots in that respect. One of the problems with keeping parrots particularly cockatiels is if the become frightened at night they will try and fly away. But they have poor night vision and in their heightened state don't notice the bars around them and can hurt themselves flying into the cage.

Yeah. I forget what species were involved, but they were all night blind. Apparently, because they were in a residential area, there were many flocks nearby who were startled awake by the noise. Given the amount of obstacles in such an area it's easy to understand how so many of them were harmed.

There has been another bird kill!. This time, it is in Louisiana. I wonder if it is fireworks again, or something different.

In the 20th century, there was a tornado that scooped up crabs and they rained down on Florida. =P

i would think that if fireworks were the cause we would see this sort of thing multiple times each year... considering we have several huge holidays where people shoot them. i still think its something else

Actually for fireworks to be the cause you have to set off large amounts of them very close to large flocks at rest, which is relatively uncommon, although not as uncommon as you may think. Furthermore, mass deaths of many types are relatively common, especially during changing seasons and major national celebrations.

And what, then, do you think it is? And have you studied and tested these animals to determine cause of death? Are you an ornithologist with knowledge of the behavior and anatomy of birds? Or do you simply have a wild speculation which you wish to hold on to instead of looking at the work of experts in the field?

Also, you may want to do some cursory research into these instances, as you'll find that many of them, especially the instances with marine life, are rather common and very well understood. You would, of course, need a basic understanding of the ecosystem, and how things such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and barometric pressure have an effect on climate and tides, and these in turn affect aviary and marine life.

I do understand that this post may seem a bit harsh, however I have reached a point where I have become rather frustrated by those who ask questions, and then reject the proper answer. Typically, it seems, this is because it disagrees with their preconceptions on the subject, whatever those may be. My advice is this, if you aren't willing to accept a legitimate and accurate answer when it's presented to you then don't bother asking the question. You are simply wasting yours, and everyone else's time, and if you are not concerned with facts and evidence then perhaps a debate forum which focuses on them may not be the most appropriate place for you.

i will admit that i have not done the proper research. there are holes in my knowledge that I just ignored. Fireworks make for a great answer to this mystery... actually... I am, for the most part, sold on that idea. I just have a problem sometimes with some coincidences and choose not to rule everything out. I play the "devil's advocate" (((in the oddest possible way most of the time))) a lot on this forum. If you don't voice your questions...whether your doubts are justified or not... then your opinion may never be heard.... and your opinion, although highly improbable, may be right... in this case... i doubt that mine is

sk8brdr... i'm only giving advice here, so please don't take it the wrong way.

try using a little more tact in your wording. identifying one opinion as the end all answer and claiming everyone else is wrong and/or calling their intelligence into question will only ruffle feathers... you can adamantly openly disagree with the majority of the people in the thread and still maintain respect and a mature conversation. remember... i'm not trying to talk down to you or anything... just giving you some advice from an older person's perspective
