a hologram in use now.

background info

I'm curious to find out your opinions. Do you see a future for holograms? or do you think its just a trivial thing that may phase itself out eventually? ....in the past, holograms were a thing of dreams. now they're here, and in use.

i don't think this will be a very heated discussion... but what are your thoughts?

...the voice in the song is supposedly 100% computer generated... just a fyi there

I'm not gonna lie, I found that video creepy.

As for holograms, I don't see much use in everyday life. But I could see them being used for concerts like the video, but maybe with a real band on one stage and holograms of that band on other stages. A world tour in one night.

Or maybe if they could be made mobile enough they could be used by military or police for tricking the criminal/enemy.

similar to the most recent Halo's hologram perk?..... why that's crazy enough that it just might work.

i think it may be possible to use in information centers... a computer could talk to you and the hologram would make it more personal... the hologram could also point and direct you to different areas of interest in that way.

but doing stuff like that may take away from the jobs available to real humans... but it would be inexpensive once up and running (i mean after installation fees and actual purchasing)... I think we may just see some holograms in use around where we live before long... or at least in my life time

Kind of like in the movie Total Recall?

There is a thread around here somewhere with a hypothesis about our universe being a hologram. I thought it was rather interesting and apparently we are close to possibly proving it.

Here's the thread

As for practical uses, I really don't see too many now, however the likelihood of us being able to actually store data in interactive holograms in the future is rather high. In such instances we may be walking up to a hologram outside of our bank who we talk to and 'touch' to access the services, or at information centers and tour areas around the world.

All I can think of is communication, for example seeing your loved ones face to face.

Or perhaps computer games....

Generally, things that happen in the Star Wars Universe. Hum Ho.

sorry to burst your bubble, but we already have that. have you heard of the newest ipod touch? it can do that by using built in cameras.

that would be fun

holograms would make school easier... definitely when i do 2 hours of bus ride (1 in the morning, the other in the afternoon)...

Clarification: Projection of them entirely, not just the face. 3G has already been around for ages, so the new Ipod Touch is merely the newest.

Actually they have been doing that for news shows in the last few elections.

Holograms could be useful in warfare. As long as they did things that seemed smart. (like hide behind stuff)

Watch this...
Touching Holograms

At the end he explains one place there may be a use for this. It could quite easily save lives in hospitals if it comes to this.

Don't mean to be a big pain but holograms were implemented in the mid-1990's by the United States military for excessive training exercises in the deserts(typical) of Arizona and New Mexico. It's highly effective in forming battle plans and techniques, which the military later uses. You know those air force commercials where it shows them in use, and then shows &quotresent day"? The former isn't far from the truth. The real truth is that if the military had more funding it would set these up in every command post, but right now they are in minimal use. You say that this isn't true perhaps? The USAF were using the F-117 Nighthawk for 9 years before anyone knew about it. So. There's an example. And holograms? I think they're cool. I would use one just to have it. Tony Stark showed us how cool they can be in Iron Man. :P

We've had holograms for years. Granted, they've been ****ty. But they've been around for a while.

i know that holograms have been around for a while... this thread was made because i see the growth and the development of this technology progressing faster than before. i wanted to know everyone else's opinion on the usage and practicality of the technology in everyday life.

It could well be the next step in communication, indeed. Eventually, there's only so much pixels you can squeeze on a flat surface, and in the end it's still flat. We're seeing commercial 3D televisions recently, so this is probably something coming in the near future.

Then again, I think holograms are extremely cool, so I might be biased ^^
