Could you point me at the one without a reply? There is usually a reason for it, if it is not in the thread itself, then perhaps in the title:
[ans] means answered, which usually means there is no further reason to keep it open.
[req] is a requested lock.
[dup] (or [dub]...) means the thread was a duplicate, and thus was locked. There would already be a thread of this topic, or you have made several threads on the same topic which has all been deleted for the same reason.
[necro] means the thread has been necro'd which means someone posted some short reply in a thread that has been long dead, or was really old.
[spam] is kinda obvious.

Then there is [NO] when someone is doing something they really should not, which would be anti-threads or something similar.

If you are talking about the dogsvscats-thread, it is generally an annoying type of thread: It's a vs-thread. People spam those up a lot, and it is easier to just lock them. Further, it does not spike discussion. Even further, it has been done and overdone countless of times and there are always other discussions about both cats and dogs.

Could we post such threads in the FG section, if we include a rule stating that our posts have to be say...ten words?

It is not actually a game, so it would probably be locked anyway.
Make a discussion out of it, instead of a poll. Or go make a poll somewhere else, make a thread discussing the issue, and link to the poll saying something like "Could you also please vote here, ktnxbai".

wait, so we can't make a poll on AG, but we can make a poll elsewhere and post on AG?

There is currently no way to make an actual poll on AG, so yes, you would have to make it elsewhere.
Voting threads, however, for the one reason to vote, is not allowed here, because it is petty spam, but if you combine a poll made elsewhere (there seem to be various ways to do so), and then combine it with a discussion thread, it is almost, almost, like you did a poll thread on AG.

The way we did a "Favorite AG User" thread a couple months ago was that each user was required to state the username and the reason(s) why he/she is your favorite user. It usually came up to around 20 words for an average. Then we (I) just posted it on my profile for awhile until the thread died. AG can't do genuine polls, but you can make makeshift ones, so long as the posts are solid enough. I and the other two guys had to respectfully ignore the (few) posts that didn't have much, or any, effort put into the reply.

sixshots, I locked your topic and apparently my title change did not load. I was trying to label it as a duplicate [dup]. So, there were two problems with the topic.

1. Like Cenere explained, it is spam in its own right.

2. The topic has already been created in a manner that promotes discussion, not listing. Cats or Dogs?
