To starty this debate, lets say that we're starting up a brand new country with no existing laws or cultural prejudices on the issue. This is because it is a much different arguement if you take the U.S., than if you take somewhere like Britain. It prevents arguments revolving around destroying the thousands of jobs in the industry too.

So. Brand new country. What are its gun laws going to be?

Should people have the right to own guns? If so, should they be securely locked away in a cabinet until the country is invaded, or should people be allowed to carry them on the street? Should people be allowed handguns but not assault rifles?

i think any one should be allowed to own guns but have like something you have to apply for or something to be allowed to carry one around the streets as many people would pull it out on people and just kill them

for them to buy one they'd have to go through a Psychological test and then they can carry really anything (obviously not rocket launchers or machineguns) so if there is an invasion everyone can be prepared

but to carry in public there has to be permit and the gun has to be registered

First things first we look at how other countries do it to get a good idea of what we are getting ourselves into... then we see that countries with guns have more people killing other people. So guns should not be readily available without a very good reason i.e. gamekeeper, shooting range etc.

I would only allow hunting rifles. To get a licensed gun, i'd make the applicant take a psychological test and look at his mental history and to see if they were ever abused or not (so as to not cause any revenge rampages), then, I'd give them tips on how to manage and clean their weapon safely and makes them do a course on firing safety. Then take them to a practice range to do a written and practical test. By the end of all that, only the people who actually want to have a gun would get it. Most people would end up not wanting a gun due to laziness so it all works out for the country right? Anyone under the age of adulthood would not be allowed the use of a gun without special reasons like cattle farming etc. Also the people trying to get a gun licwnse would need a good, proven reason.

i would keep gun crime people in a Gulag and never let them leave and in a time of crisis let the willing go to the armory and get watever weaponry is needed to defend themselves.

Well the biggest problem with gun control laws is they only control and restrict the law abiding citizens. The criminals and thieves will still get their firearms, through illegal means of course. The laws for the new country would have to require a firearms handling course, no silenced or fully automatic weapons, and a thorough background check. Getting registered in a national database would be mandatory, and the application process wouldn't take near as much red tape as it does as in some states/countries.

Yes guns. No full-auto (hold trigger and it keeps shooting). Yes shotguns and handguns. Yes high caliber (50 caliber and higher). 18 year old requirement to own. It has been proven when the public has possession of guns, criminals know not to BLAM with them.

I would say that guns are legal within reason(no rpgs, no vehicle mounted weapons) I would have a simple background and fingerprint/DNA check done. People with prior convictions would not be allowed to own a firearm. Concealed carry would be legal, but not in schools.
I would also have everyone take a firearms class.

That is something most gun control activists don't understand.

I go hunting for rabbits with my dad, and I am licensed to kill. =P

Just kidding, but I am licensed to fire a .22 rifle, and rabbits are tasty! (All vegetarians out there, don't hate me)

My dad's friend lives in Switzerland and there they have to all sign up for the army and train with there guns every 3 years I think. Switzerland is neutral so they don't see much action, but this guy decided to rob my dad's friends house with a knife and he came away with a missing finger and a bullet in the arm.

Just give everyone a grenade launcher

with no restrictions? with no tests? that could very well be the end of the new country. with people that mentally imbalanced and criminals, you won't be seeing too many cities that are intact.

And there lies one of the main problems with letting people have guns. Also it didnt help the middle eastern civilian population. The invading troops killed people regardless and the people with guns couldnt do much to protect themselves.

Other than so called protection, what good reason is there to allow the civilian population in general to have guns?

I would have thought that in the wake of a nutcase gunning down a US politician along with other innocents would galvanise some Americans to question the right to bear arms.

Instead Americans seemed to have looked inwards, found nothing, and then gone shopping at a gunstore - to stimulate the dying economy. Sad times.

I do not mind people owning guns as long as they can demonstrate they are responsible and not crazy.

In cuba there is not one single trace of civilians using or owning guns, matter of fact not even pellet/Bb guns. The safest place alive, just watch out for the machetes

And of course the criminals with guns.

All taking away guns does it make it so that criminals will have them and you won't, so you stand no chance. Hurray for pacifism.
