I looked up the lvl 1 version and it lasts 1 round/lvl.

Then that's 12 rounds for lvl 12, a minute. You couldn't effectively use it as a Mount without taking up a lot fo spell slots.

Hmm.... you could make a homebrew creature, the fur would be sparse and almost scale-like, and when threatened it could fluff up into hard, semi-sharp spines bout 4 inches long.
