Does music need vocals for you to consider it awesome? The idea crossed my mind after listening to some Apocalyptica. One of my favorite songs would be Hall of the Mountain King
Now I know that the song wasn't originally done by them but I like their version.
The real thought that crossed my mind is instrumental music now days seems to not get very much attention or respect compared to some other music that doesn't feature nearly the same amount of talented band members who can produce amazing music with real instruments. It seems to be focused on singers who auto-tune their voice into oblivion and not very much real talent.
What is your opinion on this?

Heh, going off-topic for a sec, Frank, I thought you were a mod.. xD

And, instrumental music isn't underrated I quite enjoy listening to solo guitar playing, but then again, not many people I know do.

ugh you are so right and i hate it. people just love new music because its the new trend and after a few weeks they are starting to hate it. its pretty annoying how people do that just so they can feel like they are cool. people in here lost the taste for music and thats really too bad. lol we had a vote for the song that will play on our school when classes and breaks are over and a really annoying song only i didnt like won. now (after 1 year) no one can listen to that song anymore and everyone hate it

Hip-hop though, not as much.

Actually, one of the best hip-hop albums ever is totally instrumental save for a few samples of old radio broadcasts and interviews. Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow. Instrumental hip-hop exists, and it's really really awesome. A lot of the J. Dilla compilation album Donuts could fall under instrumental hip-op, but not all of it. Same thing with some trip-hop music.

. . . anyway, I LOVE instrumental music. A bit under half of the music I listen to is instrumental, and it's some of my favorite music . . . mostly electronic, like Boards of Canada.

Yes, I agree, Instruments make a band, not fancy recording studios and &quotroduction"! btw, good link Freakenstein.
I wish we could go back to base with music, with such bands as Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and other famous bands who had nothing but a few instruments, some recording equipment, and a dream. If we can do away with all this crap we have nowadays, that would be a godsend (in my opinion). I wish that I was there in the 60's and 70's when music was actually something more than corporations making money off of crappy music that all sounds really generic, boring, and most importantly, IT ALL SOUNDS THE SAME! Go back to when the Who smashed their instruments after every concert, what "bands" nowadays would do that? Devo didn't even buy instruments, they made thier own out of things you would find in your garage, seriously, they were using things like toasters back when they first started!

Ugh, not more classic rock elitism. If you love music so much, put some effort into digging deeper because there's plenty of music out there today that's as good or better than pretty much anything you could find then. Neither era is better than the other. Music hasn't changed, mainstream music has changed and there's plenty of that mentality around, it's just not in the top 40 anymore, blah blah blah, etc. etc. And found instruments aren't special at all, a lot of musicians use them, etc. etc. It definitely doesn't sound the same, in fact if anything there's way way way WAY more variety today than there used to be, because now we have the internet. Going "back to base" with music is a terrible idea because it would get rid of all the fantastic music there is and make is easier for people to be satisfied with what's charting, which would even further disguise all the even better music that's not as popular.
