I had to read 1984 and The Kiterunner for school last semester...1984 was pretty good until the end when you feel really hopeless. The kiterunner is the opposite, in the beginning, it is horrible, but at least the end is kind of happy.
They're both about 300-400 pages.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of my all-time favorites. The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins is the one I just finished and is phenomenal. I'm a huge Anne Rice fan as well and if you haven't read any of her books you are really missing out. If you're into fantasy novels then Terry Brooks' Shannara series are wonderful. Hmm.. if you need any more ideas let me know.

Fahrenheit 451 is one of my all-time favorites.

Agreed. Bradbury is an amazing author. 451 is both exciting and interesting.

1984

Well... it's a good book. But the original is better. "We", by Yevgeny Zamyatin, was written before 1984 (the book and the year), and is superior in many ways. Unfortunately, it was written in Russian, though there are a few translations out there that are pretty good. Also, it's super short.

My personal recommendation is a short story called "'Repent Harlequin!' said the Ticktockman". by Harlan Ellison. It's kind of a humorous V for Vendetta, only more creative. It has won both the Nebula and Hugo awards, which are some of sci-fi's highest honors.

Also, there is an entire paragraph about jelly beans. You can find this story online, and in a collection of other Ellison stories. He's a pretty famous sci-fi writer (even though he refuses to be known as a sci-fi writer), so it might be worth it to buy a collection of his stories.

Ender's game.... nuff said.... this turned more than 4 people I know that HATE reading to a sci fi fans... It is (to my opinion), be far the best book anyone can read...

It combines plain hardcore sci-fi, politic strategy, messages about the human race and the great writing of one of the best writers of the 20th century...

yes Enders Games is awesome. I like all sci fi books and Orson Scott Card is a GREAT sci fi fan! There are sequels to Enders Game also. And the Star Trek: Enterprise books are amazing as well.

Yeah, Orson Scott Card is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi authors and Ender's Game is close to, if not the pinnacle, of his work.

Any religious text. It will actually help you in real life, too.

That's next up on my platter, anyways.
